Anonymous Coward User ID: 1226659 United States 07/05/2011 04:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have about $400 I would like to use to buy silver - I was thinking dimes - but ebay has mixed bags of diffrent coins. Any suggestions? Quoting: El BrujoI've got many a silver dime on ebay. Always buy based on price from sellers with good reps. If the price goes more than a few percent over spot just pass on until the next auction. Keep in mind the price of shipping. You might find your over all costs to be cheaper if you buy in larger amounts. But if you can get a roll for spot or less with a 5 buck shipping fee then might as well grab it. think about how you are going to liquidate your dimes. Selling is easy. But if your rep on ebay is trashed then think again. |

Quoting: El BrujoYes... Ebay! I have bought and sold pre 1965 90% silver coins on ebay. People seem to be honest there about what they are selling. Just make sure you read the full listing before you bid. Check their feedback and shipping costs as well. Buy as much as you can now because there won't be much left for sale at any price soon! |

If a coin is only 90% silver, than 4 ounces of coins is realy only 3.6 ounces of silver? And that is what its really worth? Last Edited by El Brujo on 07/05/2011 04:52 PM |

Quoting: El BrujoI forget exactly how it goes, but circulated coins are only considered to be about 72% I think because of wear and tear. Silver dollars do better. I think 82%. |

If a coin is only 90% silver, than 4 ounces of coins is realy only 3.6 ounces of silver? And that is what its really worth? Quoting: El BrujoHere are the weights of pre-65 silver coins: Halves - 12.5 grams Quarters - 6.25 grams Dimes 2.5 grams Each is only 90% silver, so the half dollar has 11.25 grams of silver content, etc. How I calc the troy ounces is this: multiply the number of each denomination by its' total weight, so a roll of halves (20) weighs 250 grams, multiply that by 0.9 (225 grams now) and then multiply that by the conversion factor to troy ounces (0.0321507466), which gives you, for a $10 roll of halves or quarters, 7.233 ounces, multiply that by the current spot price to get the spot value. In today's market I consider the face value of pre-65 coins to be a fair premium to pay above spot if need be, so at $35.50, a $10 roll would have a spot value of $256.77, and I would pay up to $266.77 for it. |

Be careful using the coinflation melt calculator...it uses the amounts of silver that a coin contains when struck (i.e. uncirculated). This means that the melt value amount that the calculator reports will always be somwhat higher then the melt value of circulated coins which are worn = less metal than uncirculated ones. CIRCULATED 90% SILVER COINS CONTAIN LESS SILVER THAN UNCIRCULATED COINS! ASSHOLE! |

Walk in with 2 tee-shirts on, shades, a ball cap and cash. Ask for their cheapest silver over spot and throw down your cash. If they ask for a name or other contact info---do not hesitate! Have a name and address in mind and ready to tell the seller. Put the silver in your pockets or suitcase and walk out. Do not go directly to your car. Go to bathroom and take off overshirt, hat and glasses. Then you can leave. |
