Did A Massive Solar Proton Event Fry The Earth
We are having a Long Duration Proton Event right now
[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

What is a Long Duration Proton Event?
A Solar proton event occurs when protons emitted by the Sun become accelerated to very high energies either close to the Sun during a solar flare or in interplanetary space by the shocks associated with coronal mass ejections. These high energy protons cause several effects. They can penetrate the Earth's magnetic field and cause ionization in the ionosphere. The effect is similar to auroral events, the difference being that electrons and not protons are involved. Energetic solar protons are also a significant radiation hazard to spacecraft and astronauts.

What are they known to cause?
Close to the end of the last ice age there was a sudden disappearance of many mammalian species which some paleontologists say was the most severe since the disappearance of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. In North America 95 percent of the megafauna became extinct, these being predominantly mammals having body weights greater than 25 to 50 kilograms. But even small animals were affected, as in the disappearance of 10 genera of birds.

Although North America was most affected, it had a severe impact also in Europe, Siberia, and South America. The cause of the extinction has long remained a mystery. Theories that have been put forth have ranged from overkill by North American paleolithic hunters to the impact of a large comet or swarm of meteors. But all have been shown to have serious flaws.

Now, Starburst Foundation researcher Dr. Paul LaViolette has found evidence that this mysterious die-off may have had a solar flare cause. In his paper published this week in the journal Radiocarbon, LaViolette concludes that a super sized solar proton event (SPE) impacted the earth about 12,900 years ago (12,837+/- 10 calendar years BP).*

This is all I need to hear to confirm it from me. I've been following Dr. Paul LaViolette's work, and this ties it up.

From the wikipedia article:

The more severe proton events can be associated with geomagnetic storms that can cause widespread disruption to electrical grids.

For what it's worth, there was a rainless bout of thunder and lightning last night in Houston, which shut off the power in my neighborhood for a short while. The lightning was a ways off; it was not very close at all.

This is a long duration proton FLUX beloved, not a proton event. it is a shame it is labeled that. A proton event is sudden and over fast, a sudden huge ejection of protons from the sun. We had the small short duration proton interplanetary shock on the 4th which did precede this increase in the flux.

In the flux, the protons near earth are vibrating at a high speed. it is not more protons, but higher energy protons.

I don't know what it means, but we had a flux increase before the Japan quake too. This is the graph starting on march 8. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

As you can see here, that proton flux returned to normal march 12. [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

If you are interested NIN, you can look up old plots here: [link to www.swpc.noaa.gov]

thanks for the material you posted. I don't think we are fried yet though! I seem to be typing! :peace on earth:

Since they show on Goes, the high frequency IS within the magnetosphere, but I don't know for sure, except the interplanetary shock, what caused it. I have often seen these with no elevation at all during big coronal holes and CMES, no change whatsoever, so what is curious to me, is the actual why, if there was something different this time from other shocks, CMEs and coronal holes. Neither the shock or the coronal hole was very intense.

as I posted above, there was quite an elevation before the Japan quake but I don't know if that was related or not.

Maybe this explains the hot, summer-like weather here in Texas. Summer is only 15 days away and it's a sweltering near-100 degrees to 100 degrees in my city.
