Re: Indoor garden is progressing..:)
Tomas, your flowers sound beautiful!!..:D
I have always been such a flower junkie, my whole life!..:)
I worked in the floral industry as a designer/manager, for years.. ;)
Here recently, I've really been missing the floral work, and have thought about going out and trying to find me a lil part time job at a Florist, just to fill that lil hole in my heart that misses the work.
It all got started when I had to pull out my Floral skills to create the Swamp and Forests inside the Haunted Houses. Used the skills I learned there, just used much bigger stuff....got me to missing working with beautiful, sweet smelling flowers every day...:P

I think it's awesome that you have such a riot of color and forms happening....:D
I think focusing on
'life, beauty, and color ' in our lives is real important right now, with so much sadness and darkness happening in our World today.

My perrenial beds are starting to go off like a fireworks show too...:)
I am concerned though about my Iris.
I've never seen this before, but the leaves are messed up looking, and they aren't blooming as profusely as they normally do.
The leaves have those spots on them that I have seen pics of on here.
They are small, round 'dead spots', peppered on the leaves.
It is on my Pink Primroses too...the ones under the eaves of the house are fine and gorgeous, but the ones further out along the walk, are covered with those round, dead spots on the leaves.
I saw the pics on here last year, people thought it was the chemicals in the Corexit and stuff from the Gulf causing it.
Never saw any around here , before this Spring...now it's showed up here too.
 Quoting: Woodsprite

That is interesting about the Iris plants. Only about 1/3 rd of my dafodils came up this year and they wern't nearly as big as they were last year. That thread you mentioned about the corexit was probably the one Corizon posted about her blackberries. I posted on that thread as well, because my raspberries were doing the same thing. I just pulled the pics from photobucket for my pics of my raspberries posted on that thread the other day; interesting that it comes up now. here is the link to that thread for refrence if you want it.

Yep! That's exactly what I was talking about, T.!
Looks just like that.
Not all the Iris' have it. The ones that are planted under big trees, don't have it...but the ones with nothing over them, to protect them, have those dead spots on the leaves.
Looks like if it was from the Cor-exit crap...it hasn't gone anywhere...still here with us, and now, it has reached further up N, as I'm in N. Central Ky.
This past Spring, we've had a lot of rain coming to us, up from the Gulf.
Looks like whether we get rain from the West, or South we're pretty screwed this year...the big squeeze..chemicals, and radiation...:P

Re: Indoor garden is progressing..:)
Hey T., I just had a very interesting discussion with my friend Goldenfeather...and I think I may have a reason why the plants are not blooming as profusely as they normally do.

I was talking to her about a couple of pics that were taken in Joplin Missouri....how there was a weird ORANGE glow in one of the pics, and how the pic of that double rainbow they were flashing everywhere yesterday morning, wasn't right.
There was something very wrong with that pic!
The colors in the rainbow were WRONG.
The COLOR SPECTRUM of the rainbow is messed up!
There is no RED!!
Orange is overwhelming it..and even the blues and purple seemed to be missing.

The e-mail I got back from her, explained much.
Apparently there is something happening in the upper atmosphere that has affected the RED RAY of the light spectrum!!!
Others have noticed it too!!!
They have been checking it using crystals and prisms, water mist...and RED IS MISSING.
It fluctuates, sometimes there is some red there, others it is MISSING completly.

The RED RAY is the most used by Plants ...it is what makes them thrive, and produce flowers.
If the Red Ray has gone missing, or is so diminished..it would cause the plants to not bloom as abundantly as they normally do. A vital ingredient is missing in the chemistry they require to live, flower, ect.

This does not bode well for farmers that produce our food.
We are already looking at a diminished crop, because of the excessive rainfall, flooding of the Midwest....if the plants only produce HALF THE NORMAL amount they usually do, because of the missing/diminished Red Ray...a whole lot of people are going to be in trouble come Fall/Winter... :(

You should grow some potatoes too. Just slice off the sections of sprouted potatoes and put them under an inch or so of loosely packed soil. Wait until the entire leaf system on the top of the dirt begins to die off, and dig up your potatoes! Voila! Easy to grow. Good luck. :)

Re: Indoor garden is progressing..:)
I didn't do a garden this year :(, sometimes I do an outdoor garden. I do however, have some awesome, killer tomatoe plants thriving on my patio that get sun, but no rain there. I water them myself, and I too have been collecting water since the day after Fukushima! I started filling my 2 liter DC bottles with treated water when they are empty and now have over 70 added to my water stash.
 Quoting: tomasgod1

Do you all think this is feasable for the long term? The soil has to come from somewhere...right? What about the air? What about the food you can't grow and that may be contaminated from elsewhere? Do you guys ever go outside in the elements, most people do and I'm not being a wise ass, I'm just saying how will you avoid exposure completely?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1324238

If you already have the soil, why would you need more?
Right now, the soil that is packaged for sale, has not been exposed to the fallout...it was packaged before the event occured.
Just make sure that it hasn't been soaked with rain, and it's all good.
The air is being filtered thru the house system.
True, it won't get 100% of all the fallout...but it sure will catch quite a bit of it.
The plants will not be sitting out in the open air 24/7..with it accumulating on their leaves, and getting highly soaked with it everytime it rains.

About the other food...well, people will just have to do the best they can, and try and avoid buying stuff that has been produced in the hardest hit areas.
Right now, a good place to be getting it from is the Southern Hemisphere...

I have been going outside, on a very limited basis...and when I do, I cover up, head to toe with clothing of some sort...change immediatly when I get home.
I also don't go out in the rain..
When I am at home, and outside doing something like working in the flower beds..I'm wearing a dust mask, trying not to accidentally inhale any of the crap.

We will never be able to avoid exposure 100%, but it will help, if you take steps to protect what is going in your body.
If there is any way of trying to cut my Cancer risks...I'm gonna try it....because I just don't want to die that way.

I may not be able to completly keep myself free of fallout...but I sure am going to be making a big effort, and hopefully, I will have some success in limiting my exposure to it.

^this^

I worked in the medical field for years. There was a time when health care providers were constantly exposed to "Blood Born Pathogens" such as HIV, Hepatitis B, C, D, H etc. When health care providers started dying from exposure to these pathogens via infected patients, there was a system put in place to protect them. The system is "Wash you damn hands"...kidding..ha!..gotcha!. No really, it is called "universal precautions". "Universal Precautions" is basically gloving, bleaching, isolation, and not cross contaminating from a "dirty" to a "clean" area. A simple yet very complex, and detail oriented set of precautions.

One would be well served to learn the above mentioned procedures and apply them to the standard of protection you wish to incur from this situation. The above standard can be easily read with a quick browser search.

Re: Indoor garden is progressing..:)
This week, I've been working on getting the indoor garden truly set up.
My baby plants were coming out of their second bigger houses, so It really needed to get moving along!

I went to Lowes and found some nice shop light fixtures, that have a corded end, so I won't have to wire them together, they were $49 apiece, and hold 4, 4' bulbs .
I got 2 of them, 8 'sunshine' bulbs.
I bought 6 2x4x8's, and cut them down a bit in size...nailed them together to make a wooden U shape..I used barb-wire fence staples to use as 'hangers' on the top 2x4.( I did this, because I needed to not obstruct the overhead door. It is still easily close-able, should a bad storm come rolling in)
After they were together, I stood them up and put each leg of the U into a single concrete block, and filled in around the 2x4 with small gravel.
The lights hang from the top of the U, on chains, so I can adjust the light, up or down, as the plants require it.( the chains hook into the staple with an S hook)

I took a huge piece of clear heavy plastic and first duct taped it over the garage door opening...both inside and outside, over the opening, and then I went back and used tacks to tack into the wood facing of the garage door on the outside.

It's looking really good!!! ..:D

My friend Michelle, brought me a bunch of Kitty Litter buckets that she had been saving ( LOL she has 9 cats and uses 3 of them a week!!!)...and they are the perfect size for holding a tomato plant, or an eggplant plant...:)
So, now, I have this cool little set-up happening in the garage!...:D
Since moving the babies into their bigger houses...it looks like I have a kick ass lil garden already happening!

This entire project...including the 8 bags of 2 cu.ft., Miracle Grow dirt to fill all those buckets up( 31, 20 liter)....has cost me less than $300...about $250 to be exact.
About the same as 1 trip to the grocery store these days...:P
I don't think it's too great of an expense to not be worth doing.
It's the ONLY way, I'll know 100% for sure, that my veggies are free of radioactive fallout.
Is $250 too much to spend for that kind of assurance of food safety?
I've also been storing water...everytime I empty a distilled water jug...I refill it with more water, to use later in the year to water the plants with...when the radiation levels in our tap water become high...I'll have some water not so heavily contaminated, to care for the garden with...:)
I've been squirreling the water away, since the day I saw those 2 reactors explode over there...so I have a pretty good stash happening.

So far, I have, tomatos, sweet peppers, eggplants, cauliflower, and broccoli growing in the basement..:)
I plan on having some greenbeans, squash, and melons too.
I have a whiskey barrel that has been cut in half..I'm thinking it will be a good place to make a mini- greenbean Teepee in...:)
And I have seveal long windowboxes, that I think will work for the squash and stuff that isn't real deep rooted, they can consider the windowbox their 'hill'..spill out across the floor with their vines...:)

Anyone else doing an 'indoor garden' this year?
I'd love to hear about your set-up....have your's is doing so far...:)

Hum, great. Oh btw, radioactivity goes through walls...
 Quoting: AxE-i-DeNt

Gamma rays travel through walls..but we are not concerned about gamma rays. we are concerned about the "particles" that are in our atmosphere and landing on our food, and getting all over everything, as well as being inhaled in the air we breath! Alpha particles such as radioactive plutonium..(I am going to have to make you think)... is a particle..like a speck of dust..these alpha rays can't even barely get through a thick piece of paper, yet if you ingest or inhale one plutonium particle...YOUR ASS IS TOAST! Beta particles emit "beta rays" types.. radioactive iodine or cesium. Beta rays can be stoped by thick aluminum, yet if you ingest or inhale beta particles they will "decay" in your body, destroying those tissues that they emit rays next to for as long as they are there causing CANCER. Are you starting to get the picture?

Figured it was time for an update on the indoor garden.

It's kickin' ass!!!..:D
Everything is growing so fast, healthy green color.
The sweet peppers and the tomato plants are setting buds to start blooming...:)
I added another light, with 4 bulbs this week, because the plants are so much bigger, need more space!
I also added a fan set on 'low', that rotates back and forth to give them a lil wind action.
LOL..they also have a nice jambox that plays classical music all day for them too...:P
I went in the woods, and cut a bunch of Cane Poles to use as supports for the maters and green beans.
They work really nice in a tee-pee for supporting the tomatoes.
Everyone is looking good... ;D

P.S

My tomato plants have made about all they are going to do this year....I can take a few cuttings off my plants and do a "redo" I guess..if I want, but it has been a shitty year. With temps over 100 every day I am tired of dealing with them for the bother! I know! Terrible me! If I had to...I could!

I cut my roses back to around 3 ft....of course a lot of looking to pick the right spot. My gardenias tried to bloomb again but the buds all fell off...way too hot! The hanging baskets of bouganvilleas are twisting in the wind and eat a mix of 1/2 TBS MG 18/18/21 per GAL water....every day! If they do not get their food ..or they get plain water...off go the bloombs! hehe...thats what you call a "heavy feeder"! People slow down and stare at those Bouganvilleas with 6 ft tendrils swinging in the breeze..and loaded with bloombs! It took me a while to figure them out...the key is "heavy..heavy...heavy..feeding"

It's still doing really well, T....:)
Baby veggies starting to come on now...:)

I'm still doing everything by hand...no timer, but it appears to be working alright.

My tomatos and peppers were a bit behind other people's that are outside...but I figured it was because they need to feel the heat on their leaves and feet.
So, I've put a small ceramic heater in the garage to amp up the heat for them...which seems to be working...starting to make babies now...:)
Never thought about the buckets sitting on a concrete floor being such a big deal...but apparently it is.

Thanks for the well wishes!...:)

I have to agree!
Never thought I'd have to move everything inside before this year though...:P
I've always had outside gardens...but this year, the veggies are inside, and my outside beds are covered over/protected from the radioactive rain.

One plus about growing it inside....I bet I'll be able to have more 'growing time' than peeps that are ouside gardening.
A lil heater in there would keep everyone snug and safe until it gets down bitter cold..Jan/Feb....:)

Good information about the bougainvilleas! Thanks! Would love to see your great big baskets.

I have never lived anywhere where those could do really well, but when visiting the Yucatan in Mexico, I saw where the giant vines grew up the huge tall trees and covered the entire top of the tree in flaming scarlet, that was so impressive.
