Heavy rain adds weight and also permeates down... might loosen things up a bit. |

It adds a lot of extra weight if the area is fragile Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1352300The area is "silty" and very soft...almost no bedrock..I heard a geologist say one time that it might assist in loosening up the fault... |

In 1937, the Mississippi River topped out at 53.2 feet. In 2008, the river reached 50.9 feet, the highest since 1973 when it reached 51.6 feet. The benchmark 1927 flood reached 56.2 feet on today's gauges. [link to www.chicagotribune.com] |

All our flood records were broken here in Queensland two months ago so guess what?... Quoting: ACDC 433433Dooom! AH! For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in. |

I think it depends what is under the river....? I once read that if ROCK in the New Madrid area gets soaked / saturated it would be bad and cause an earthquake... so if it floods and goes by rock... That was in a fictional novel about a New Madrid earthquake, so it may not be accurate even. It was a good book. I think it was called "The Rift". The first half dealt with the earthquake and the second half was more on people's behavior after the disaster. I must say the second half was far more disturbing. It was a very FAT book, tons of pages. But I will your question. |
