"Israel considered former president Hosni Mubarak a treasure," Egyptian foreign minister Nabil al-Arabi said in an interview on Dream TV late Saturday, April 2, reported Al-Ahram newspaper. Mubarak, who had ruled for 30 years, was forced out of power in February after an 18-day popular uprising. The ousted leader was Israel's best friend in the Arab world for 30 years, far friendlier than the masses in his country. He was also a long-standing supporter of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and playing a key role in supporting the US-sponsored peace negotiations. Israel always relied on Mubarak as a partner in maintaining peace in the Middle East. Israel "could have gotten whatever it wanted out of him," Arabi said. Now "the treasure is gone."
