Radiation:

Radiowaves
Microwaves
Lightwaves
Heatwaves (Heat)
X-Rays
Gamma Rays

All the same - just different vibrational rates (Frequencies Wavelengths)

The sun gives off Radiation (light and a whole lot more)

You CANNOT Filter with a water filter

USE YOUR BRAIN if you have one.

Thread: Radiated Water Filtration Advise by GLP

This link has a video that shows one way. I can't find the link I had on how to make the one we will use out of a coffee can. Basically you just get a coffee can and put nail holes in the bottom about 2 inches from the middle all the way around. Turn it over and put some clean rocks in the bottom. Cover the rocks with a fibrous cloth, like a wash cloth. Cover the cloth with several inches of clay dirt (dig a hole in the backyard about 4 inches down. This wil give you clean dirt without any radiation particles on it) Then cover the dirt with another cloth like a towel. Filter your water through by placing the filled can on stilts over a bucket.

I suppose after you could filter it again or add some bleach (I don't recall how much right now) or some water purification tablets if you are concerned about other bacteria.

If I can find the link on my other computer tonight with directions I will post it when I get home.

Re: SERIOUS QUESTION. ... Does a water filter remove radiation from water?
Radiation that we are worried about is not 'free floating' radiation, it is being emitted by particulate matter that is radioactive.

Thus it depends on the filter type, what size particles is filters out and the size of the particulate matter.

Activated Charcoal will remove most of the particulate matter. Mind the more charcoal the water percolates through the less impurities one gets on the far end.

One can use non-activated charcoal, The process of making charcoal is to burn it with low oxygen, so the material smolders, but doesn't produce a flame. It used be be cone by burying a pile of wood under soil, then setting the wood on fire and keeping the soil over the wood from cracking open. In a few days time the wood would burn into charred black remnants.

Such material can be used to filter water. If you break it up and partially grind it, place it over a layer of clean sand. Let water run over the charcoal, through it and through the sand the end product is clean water.

Re: SERIOUS QUESTION. ... Does a water filter remove radiation from water?
Hey Anonymous Coward. What are you doing here? I usually see your comments pertaining to amateur wrestling. Well, I too would like to find out if one can somehow get radio active particles out of contaminated water. It seems like most of our water is going to end up contaminated the way things are going. My family owns a water source that comes from an aquifer that is underground. I suppose that contaminated rainwater will filter down through hundreds of feet of soil to reach our water source. I don't suppose there is any way the soil is going to filter out the radio activity. It seems like once it is radio active it is almost part of the water itself. So what the hell do we drink?

Most health food stores have electric home water distillers...I paid about $150 each for mine...they make a gallon at a time...you can always use two pots with one on top of the other but offset and catch the drops as they condensate...

As to weather they work or not, I don't know.

I know someone who has a natural spring on their property.
I think I will start getting my drinking water from them.

The way I figure it, if a person can get water that has LESS radiation in it, then so much the better.

And if a filter will remove even SOME of the radioactive material from the drinking water, so much the better.

Thanks to everyone who participated in this discussion.

If your looking for a R/o filter system in a hurry check your local hydroponic store if there is one nearby.
They have them on the shelf..

Filters every three months at $330 per time is pretty spendy for the average household.

water will not stay permanently contaminated. Reverse Osmosis will remove the tiny particulate that is radioactive. If you are still worried get a RO unit along with a de-ionizer and you will get everything out of the water

and this is a FACT directly from my chief scientist of the water company I own. He also told me that per capita, Japan citizen own more RO units than any other country so those people will be the lucky ones that can still drink their filtered tap water. Taking a shower or bath is another story unless you have an industrial sized home RO unit

ps RO=reverse osmosis

I was at the store the other day, buying boxes of powdered milk. I look around and think, hmm what else should I buy?

I realized that everything is going to be contaminated with radiation. What to do? I can't buy a year's worth of everything! And even if I did, what about when that year is up?

All foodstuff will be contaminated with radiation for many, many years.

verysad

Needless to say, I didn't buy anything else. It is what it is. So be it.

Re: SERIOUS QUESTION. ... Does a water filter remove radiation from water?
You can filter radiated isotopes. Granulated Activated Carbon will remove a considerable amount of radioactive contamination. There are resins that remove more than carbon does. One resin selects for cesium and strontium. Others select for anionic and cationic isotopes. Radioactive iodine is filtered by both cation and anion resins and by activated carbon.....

See Wikipedia about how ionization can be used for decontamination......

This is similar to an earth filtration, but increases the selective filter materials to target the contaminants. So you can get much more decontamination quickly as the water flows through the filter materials.....

Available on or about April 25 from friendsofwater.com. Specialized cartridges are being built now. See [link to shop.friendsofwater.com]

Please stop posting your nonsense about an 'earth filter'. You dont know what youre talking about, you are obviously radiologically, scientifically and logically illiterate, yet for some reason you continue to provide and advocate false information. You, if you chose to open your yap and dispense garbage for advice, are responsible for misleading all those too stupid to know that you are leading them astray. There is nothing that will be filtered out in a bucket full of dirt, other than cleanliness, and definately not anything radioactive.

Re: SERIOUS QUESTION. ... Does a water filter remove radiation from water?
By the way.. I'm not sure that distilling the water will work either.. I have heard that the steam (that's what distilled water is) from the plant was radioactive.. meaning that the isotopes were lighter than water and distilled into the steam as well.. I could be wrong on that as I'm not a physicist.. maybe someone could find that out before someone distills their water and gets sick because there was still (pardon the pun) radioactivity in it
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1311534

One of the problems with distilling is that iodine has a low boiling point - it turns into a gas at 184 Celsius. The little home distillers use high pressure for efficiency and if they are using over ~140 psi they will be vaporising the radioactive iodine along with the water.

A low pressure distiller like the type used for distilling alcohol won't boil off the iodine.

The radioactive steam has extra contamination of all different elements (some in tiny solid or liquid particles (smoke or smog)) because of the violence of the explosions/fires/whatever else.
