SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)

A SUNSPOT WITH A TAIL: Sunspot AR3092 has a tail--a really long one. "It extends for about 390,000 km above the surface of the sun," says Eduardo Schaberger Poupeau who photographed the structure from Rafaela, Argentina:

"To understand this size more visually, the dark core of sunspot AR3092, seen in the upper left, is about the size of planet Earth," notes Poupeau.

The sunspot's tail is a filament of magnetism emerging from the sunspot's core and curling away into the sun's atmosphere. Contained inside the filament is a long tube of relatively cool, dark pasma. Only one end of the filament is moored, so it could become unstable and begin to move around. A flick of this tail could send a CME toward Earth. Stay tuned.

Inouye Solar Telescope on Maui, Hawai’i. With a four-meter diameter mirror, it is currently the largest solar telescope in the world able to resolve features on the sun as small as 18 km.

Yeah, Cosmo888. I noticed that the last 2 days I have
been checking it.

I go to MrMBB333's site and it is one of the links--
no updates for 2 days. I think since that HUGE BACK-SIDE
ERUPTION it hasn't been recording. Wonder if that "Solar
event" was part of something they don't want the public
to know about.

Coincidentally to THIS...Ben Davidson of the Suspicious Observers
posted a video with a very very rare DATE PREDICTION from
him for September 23rd. Davidson said we may want to
"brace ourselves" for a possible CARRINGTON EVENT from
sunspot 3088--the one that blew up on the backside between
the 5th and 6th.

Something is very fishy here.

I think it will come back. These 'blackouts' happen every now and then.

Watch the solar movie feed you'll see that nasty 3088
sunspot going off again. The whole event will probably
not be in the film for a few more hours (it is 1:11 PM EST now)...but you can get an idea of a fairly large backside
eruption just over the limb where 3088 rotated this week.

NOAA totally missed the filament release. Nothing major really, but if we have an 'unpredicted Stealth CME' in 3 days you'll know why :) Small CMEs launched straight at SoHO's camera often go undetected.

SHOULD WE BE CONCERNED ABOUT BLUEWALKER 3? Later today, SpaceX will launch an unusual satellite: BlueWalker 3. Designed to supply 4G cell phone signals from space, Bluewalker 3 will unfurl a large antenna spanning 64 square meters--the size of a squash court:

This flat surface orbiting 500 kilometers above Earth will reflect a lot of sunlight, which could make the satellite extremely visible to observers on the ground. It could become brighter than the planet Venus, outshining everything in the night sky except the Moon.

While this is only a single satellite for now, Bluewalker's maker AST SpaceMobile plans to launch more than 100 larger satellites called BlueBirds. These satellites, which could be more than twice the size of BlueWalker 3, would appear even brighter in the sky.

For astronomers, the satellites could create bright streaks across images from ground-based telescope, potentially making them unusable for observing more distant objects.

Should we be concerned? Maybe. First let's see how bright Bluewalker 3 actually is. It is scheduled to launch from Cape Canaveral on Sept 10th between 9:10 p.m. to 9:20 p.m. EDT. A batch of 34 Starlink satellites will share the ride.

Solar Activity

.24 hr Summary...
Solar activity was at low levels. Region 3100 (S25E48, Csi/beta)
produced a C2/1F flare at 10/1119 UTC, the strongest event of the
period. This region along with Region 3098 (N18W08, Cao/beta) and newly
numbered Region 3101 (N29W57, Bxo/beta) exhibited minor development.
Region 3096 (N16E19, Dao/beta) was in gradual decay. The remaining
numbered regions were mostly stable.

A slow-moving CME was observed in LASCO coronagraph imagery off the SE
limb beginning at about 10/0448 UTC. Modeling of the CME suggested the
ejecta would move south Earths orbit.

An approximate 14 degree filament structure lifted off at 10/1929 UTC.
Analysis of a potential CME is pending as coronagraph imagery becomes
available.

.Forecast...
Solar activity is likely to continue at low levels, with a slight chance
for R1-R2 (Minor-Moderate) radio blackouts, over 11-13 Sep.

Our old friend AR3088 is poised to return very soon in the SE. This powerhouse is still churning out CMEs.

Can honestly say the dirst place i went when i saw 3088 fire off the CME of the century on the far side was here.

Any idea when 3088 will be earth facing and the current polarization?

INCREASING CHANCE OF FLARES: NOAA forecasters say there is a 20% chance of M-class solar flares today, but that may be an underestimate. Sunspots AR3098 and AR3101 are both increasingly active, and old sunspot AR3088 (famous for hammering Venus) is now returning over the southeast limb.
