GIANT SOLAR PROMINENCE: There's a loop of plasma on the sun's eastern limb so large that normal scientific notation doesn't describe it. "It's ginormous," explains Richard N. Schrantz, who sends this picture from his backyard observatory in Nicholasville, Kentucky:

https://imgur.com/4FbsgxM

The arch is 325,000 km long--almost the distance between Earth and the Moon. These dimensions make it an easy target for backyard solar telescopes. If you have one, don't wait. The right foot of the structure is increasingly unstable, and the whole thing could collapse at any moment.

will this prominence create the hyder flare i think it is called? um wasn't that what that huge carrington event was about?
 Quoting: deplorable granny basket

First, the Carrington Event was undoubtedly a huge X-flare likely preceded by several more large flares w/ CMEs. A 'perfect storm' scenario, if you will.

Second, it's possible that this filament could produce a double-ribbon (or Hyder) flare. I thinks it's unlikely in this instance. Hyder flares are somewhat rare compared to the number of filament eruptions, but they're not usually huge or Earth-threatening in nature.

Thanks for asking!

Well...there ya go! It sure explains why they are giving
NASA's SDO a short "vacation!" I don't think they want any of
the PUBLIC "amateurs" analyzing this thing themselves,
until they have a chance to really observe it and assess
the risk factors. It may NOT create a Carrington Event
if it "lets go"...but it could have some serious consequences. It's concerning at the very least!

Outage alert: A fiber-optic link between SDO's White Sands ground station and Stanford University is down. Daily sun updates will be delayed until repairs are complete.

Another "super classy" solar presentation from Athens
YouTube narrator "NemesisMaturity"--beautiful pics today
(8-05-2022!)

[link to youtu.be (secure)]
FairUSE
An unusual sunspot is on the backside of the Sun
which Nemesis reports is affecting "the way the sun is
vibrating." (Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad
thing--he doesn't go into it.) Reports that this will
be turning into the earth-facing position if "a few days"
(so I'd expect it next week.)

Nemesis ALSO MENTIONS THAT HUGE "PROMINENCE" that is
discussed in a couple of posts above mine. Nemesis describes
it as a "ROLLING-DANCING-PROMINENCE." Showing at one point
it had "rolled down the side of the sun" (from about the
11 o'clock position down to about the 9 o'clock position.)
Not sure if the sun does this often or not...but the
SOLAR PICTURES are just awesome.

All-in-all, however, no negative reports at this time.

Have a super weekend you guys! Hope everyone is feeling
good and can get outdoors.

AMATEUR ASTRONOMERS FILLING IN FOR SDO: Images from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) are temporarily unavailable as technicians rush to repair a broken fiber optic cable linking SDO's White Sands ground station to Stanford University. This is a major outage.

Meanwhile, amateur astronomers are photographing the sun and seeing several new sunspots. Here is a montage from Pepe Manteca of Barcelona, Spain:

https://imgur.com/r7X3x3p

"This morning I was shooting AR3068, but it looked very different compared to the latest SDO images," says Manteca. "Then I read on spaceweather that there is a breakdown with the data from SDO, and I saw in my telescope that there are three new sunspots."

These sunspots did not exist (or were invisible) when SDO's cable broke on August 3rd, highlighting the importance of continued monitoring by amateur astronomers.

Great news that SDO was fixed. Last time lasted way too long.

Strangely, all of our current sunspots are in the southern hemisphere contrary to recent history.

I'm also of a conspiratorial mindset, but in a different way. If SARS-COV2 showed us anthing, it proved our Adverary is intelligent, devious and ruthless. I get an alert for "X-flare" articles just so I can correct the MSM ignorance regarding solar events. Lately my inbox is getting hammered with articles about mundane sunspots and hypothetical G1 storms. I've never seen such coverage across the internet especially when activity is very low. Why is this?

It can't be 'filler material' because the tidal wave of daily breaking news of wars, economic collapse and protests must be overwhelming news orgs. to keep pace. Why a sudden interest in solar activity?

Many of these articles are mostly lifted from Dr. Tony's spaceweather.com and the rare NOAA press release; and appear on little-known sci-tech websites.... cut & paste mostly. But more disturbing is lately large British tabloids and even NEWSWEEK is reporting on C-flares.....wtf?

[link to www.newsweek.com (secure)]

TWO SDO data outages seem to be a dress rehearsal for a possible 'solar false-flag' event. I'm not predicting one, I'm just suspicious. Like you said, they don't want amatuers or the general public to make their own analysis when they declare a 'space weather emergency'. Stay skeptical and question everything!

WHAT JUST HAPPENED TO BETELGEUSE? You've heard of a CME, a "coronal mass ejection." They happen all the time. A piece of the sun's tenuous outer atmosphere (corona) blows off and sometimes hits Earth. Something far more terrible just happened to Betegeuse. The red giant star produced an SME, or "surface mass ejection."

https://imgur.com/LBhs6fm

NASA astronomers believe that in 2019 a colossal piece of Betelgeuse's surface blew off the star. The mass of the SME was 400 billion times greater than a CME or several times the mass of Earth's Moon. Data from multiple telescopes, especially Hubble, suggest that a convective plume more than a million miles across bubbled up from deep inside the star, producing shocks and pulsations that blasted a chunk off the surface.

"We've never before seen such a huge mass ejection from the surface of a star," says Andrea Dupree of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, who is leading the study. "Something is going on that we don't completely understand."

After it left the star, the SME cooled, forming a dark cloud that famously dimmed Betelgeuse in 2019 and 2020. Even casual sky watchers could look up and see the change. Some astronomers worried that the dimming foreshadowed a supernova explosion. The realization that an SME is responsible has at least temporarily calmed those fears.

https://imgur.com/QWYVFR4

Betelgeuse's brightness has since returned to normal, but something strange is still going on. Astronomers have long known that Betelgeuse is a variable star with a 430-day period. Its metronome-like change in brightness has been observed for more than 200 years. As Betelgeuse recovers, however, those pulsations are no longer regular.

Spectra taken by Hubble and the Tillinghast telescope in Arizona imply that years later the surface of Betelgeuse is still bouncing like a plate of gelatin dessert--a testament to the ferocity of the blowout.

Betelgeuse is so large that if it replaced the sun at the center of our solar system, its atmosphere would extend past Jupiter. Dupree used Hubble to resolve hot spots on the star's surface in 1996. This was the first direct image of a star other than the sun.

What's happening now "is a totally new phenomenon that we can observe directly and resolve surface details with Hubble," says Dupree. "We're watching stellar evolution in real time."

Re: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)
Really an excellent over-view of this information on Betelgeuse,Simple27!

What I would like to know, however, since this information
is reported in the article to have been discovered almost
THREE FULL YEARS AGO...why are they just announcing it now?

For example, one of the daily sites I check for spaceweather
updates is at the link (below.) There is an "excited Forum
thread" reporting: "SOMETHING JUST HAPPENED TO BETELGEUSE!"
...AS IF this were something nobody reported yet. What gives
here? Check out the posts on Betegeuse:
[link to earthboppin.net]

It's like they just found this out last week or something,
not 3 years ago! I'm thinking that there is--in fact--
SOMETHING NEW NEWS "RELEASE" NASA IS ABOUT TO ANNOUNCE
(ADDING to the already known information about Betelgeuse's
"solar MICRO-NOVA 2019!)...

THEY ARE ABOUT TO ADD to this report but want everyone on
the same page when they tell us. (Like...a hypothetical
announcement: "There's a huge energy wave coming in from Betelgeuse--which is affecting Earth's magnetic shields"
...or something equally amazing!)

We'll see! Thanks for that huge post on BETELGEUSE (above.) Was very informative.

cheers

Re: SOLAR WATCH * Huge X8.2 Flare Sept. 10, 2017! (Updated Daily)
Flare activity is increasing lately. I counted 9 sunspots on the Earth-facing disk. Several of these appear to be growing. We may be on the verge of another outbreak of strong flaring. Lately we've seen a steady parade of spots but activity has been very low. This situation may be changing soon...

New Earth-facing AR 3079 has already produced 14 C-flares! The strongest being the C6.7 earlier this morning.

We just had a C4.4 flare from an inexplicably unnumbered region in the NE.

To add to the 3079 info

INCREASING CHANCE OF FLARES: Active sunspot AR3079 is crackling with C-class solar flares. This movie from the Solar Dynamics Observatory shows one of the explosions on Aug. 13th happening not far from a dark magnetic filament:

https://imgur.com/KWVkC1g

The proximity of the filament may be significant. Repeated nearby flares could destabilize the structure, resulting in a CME-producing explosion.

Meanwhile, activity in the core of AR3079 is intensifying, and an M-flare could be in the offing. Stay tuned.
