According NOAA there was 2 simultaneous events- a powerful far side eruption and the bright of tongue of plasma from an Earthside filament liftoff.

I'm wondering how many folks have come into the solar
thread--as I just did this morning in my A.M. "fog"--and
NOT REMEMBERING THIS!



Page 1 has a date stamp of 3-2017 with a report of a
HUGE X-8 SOLAR FLARE. Sometimes I will get in a rush to
check the thread and not remember to MOVE to this last page
...I just start to read page 1!

The interesting thing about the boo-boo TODAY, however...
is that I WAS NOT SURPRISED reading: "HUGE X8 class flare
and CME" (page 1)...as the sun seems to be very DYNAMIC these past few
weeks.

Can someone with lots of solar expertise tell us whether
we are going to see flares in the "X8-CLASS" with the
upticks we are seeing this month?

NOAA/SWPC update on CME-- not Earth-directed---

Other activity included an approximate 10 degree filament eruption,
centered near S13W33, that began at 23/1840 UTC. An associated CME was
observed in SOHO/LASCO C2 imagery off the SW limb at 23/1912 UTC. At the
same time was a backsided, full-halo CME observed in coronagraph
imagery. Initial model output from the SW CME suggested no Earth impact,
but further analysis is ongoing.

I would leave the door open for a weak glancing blow possibility. I can't help but wonder what happened on the far side. Judging by the full halo CME, it must've been a big event.

SOLAR ECLIPSE SEASON IN SPACE: Eclipse season for NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) has begun. Every day for the next three weeks, around 0730 UT, Earth will pass between SDO and the sun, producing images that look like this.

This is a twice-a-year event for SDO caused by the alignment of the sun and Earth as seen from the spacecraft's geosynchronous orbit.

Great info!! I follow earthboppin.net and sometimes they post GRB but I wish there was a better way to track them. I'm sure all of them are not reported there.

A SUNSPOT OF INTEREST: New sunspot AR3068 near the sun's southeastern limb is still small, but it is growing rapidly, tripling in size since yesterday. It merits watching as a possible source of near-future activity.

I suspect the magnetosphere has weakened in the past and has possibly led to increase in consciousness. Possibly accounting for periods of tremendous advancement.

We Don't seem to get many postings about gamma ray bursts
--not sure why. Maybe they took some of the detecting sites
off-line--not sure.

Does ANYONE have a credible site for watching Gamma Ray Bursts? Haven't been able to locate one.
