Quoting: HitndahedfredNot all of us here know or have the time to learn the jargon used in this industry but ARE intelligent enough to understand a "simpler" explanation. Thanks in advance Hiya Fred! Not likely to effect power grids themselves but possibly switching. More likely communications especially satellite com, at the moment the ham radio bands are very quiet, no propagation, most likely due to atmospheric absorption. Last time I checked my watch it still said America |

I was just tryn to get a grip on this in case we have an outage today. So I can explain it correctly to the powers that are. Ya kno Each time a person stands for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he or she sends forth a tiny ripple of hope. And crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance. Few are willing to embrace the disapproval of their fellows, the censure of their colleagues, the wrath of their society. Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. They will die when an X-ray hits the wrong thing inside. IIRC, satellites blackout for several hours to maybe a whole day, it depends on the storm. You want doom? How about X-rays (which accompany CMEs) whacking a geosynchronous satellite and it starts to drift. If it hits another satellite then you will have debris moving through that important orbit that will eventually whack all the others making the entire orbit unusable forever. Something in geosynchronous orbit is up there for 100's of thousands of years. |

Boy your gullible...X rays dont travel with CMEs they are a component of light and travel at the speed of light as does all electromagnetic radiation and only takes 8 minutes to get here from the sun VS 2-3 days usually. Besides the worst of this hit yesterday already. Move along now.. |

I do know the difference. Thanks for bringing it to my attention. It did actually start over Austrailia yesterday before moving over South America, and then out over the pacific as a much smaller area. I don't know why I did that! Anonymous Coward User ID: 1065356 United States 02/17/2011 11:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Long-range communications using high frequency (HF) radio waves (3 - 30 MHz) depend on reflection of the signals in the ionosphere. Radio waves are typically reflected near the peak of the F2 layer (~300 km altitude), but along the path to the F2 peak and back the radio wave signal suffers attenuation due to absorption by the intervening ionosphere. Quoting: tomasgod1[link to www.swpc.noaa.gov] This area started off as very small after this latest round of large Solar Flares, and has continued to grow in size as it has traveled the globe. Below are two images taken within the past few hours that are approximately an hour appart. By comparing these images you can see the rate at which this area is progressing toward the Americas. :blackout1: :blackout2: |

Key fobs, garage door openers, security locking/unlocking mechanisms, key less entry etc. Watch all the folks who can't get into their houses because they can't open the garage door, but in their pocket is a key to the front door !!! Or, they say they can't get into their cars and when you tell them "use the key" they look at you dumbfounded. We're forgetting what we knew by a technical convenience and when that convenience is interrupted we panic. |
