Re: Why Linux is better
with firefox's video downloadhelper plugin i can download all the porn and youtube vids that are in flv or mp4 format, edit them in pitivi or openshot moviemaker, add effects or plainly play them for offline usage in totem..
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1257172

Tip: Adobe Flash (flashplayerX.so) saves all FLV files in /tmp/ directory as FlashXXXXX

Just copy those to where you want them as file.flv. You can even do the copy while it is still downloading as the handle is still valid wherever the file is thanks to ext fs. If you close the player before you copy the file it will be deleted by the flash player but if you copy it before you close it won't be deleted.

I never could get flash to work properly in Ubuntu, some play fine but many have tearing and color anomalies

then its the videodriver. flash these days makes use of hardware acceleration ( will be default in flash 10.2 ).

for ati radeon and nvidia gpus ( even laptop cards ) one should always use the proprietary drivers from ati.com and nvidia.com, not the open source ones as those lack features that are critical for colour/opengl/compositing e.g. all multimedia stuff.

for me on my laptop its a must have - cause with the open source driver my fan runs constantly at full speed. Only with catalyst from ati the card can speedstep the gpu clockmodes like in windows - and is silently ;)

yup.well said .. its really the laziness after all.

installing ubuntu is as easy as setting up vista or 7. 3 to 4 questions, five clicks and it is installed. the rest is up to you. with the appstore nowadays a user has not even to bother with apt-get or synaptic. getting software for windows is harder for newbies .. so i really dont understand.

It just works, you know?

When you ask Linux to do something it just does it, not like Windows which says 'are you sure?' every five fucking minutes.

I'm in an anti-Windows mood today.

Note to fanboys: I use both, and I know which is better through experience not fandom.

Glad it works for you.

Who the fuck cares what god you worship.

If it works for you good. If you're happy with Linux and its shortcomings great. If all you do is browse the internet and send a few emails, it probably has no shortcomings for you. I'm happy for you.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1118750

See, it's contradictions like this that show how dysfunctional people can be. I blame the lack of critical thinking skills being taught in public education.

Poster your ignorance is blatantly obvious. And don't bother insulting me I'm an AC, I don't have an ego to offend.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1253839

What its true, I hear Linux users complain all the time that things don't work, that the Linux version of many programs hasn't been updated for months/years/doesn't exist.

If you don't do much on your computer maybe you'll never notice. Maybe your happy running windows in a VM or dual booting for those times you need it.

Perhaps you're happy with the lack of choice or second rate programs you have to suffer at times.

Maybe Linux gives you some benefit that outweighs the shortcomings for you, not for me.

Its a personal thing, it depends on your needs and use, what you value, and what you're willing to compromise on.

Linux might be best for you, not for me.

Re: Why Linux is better
Linux can be used for audio ( jack audio server, ardour , hydrogen plus drumkits, virtual organs, guitars, pianos makes a nice studio setup) and high quality video production ( btw. Hollywoods "Lightworks" is opensource now ! ), for photoshop-equal retouche-jobs ( yes gimp can handle abr brushes !) ,for wacom paintjobs (mypaint is as good as painter from corel ) , even for print-document-desktop-publishing jobs ( inkscape, xara , scribus , all the laTEX tools )..

if you want to capture a glimpse on what a Multimedia-stuffed-up distro has to offer I suggest you search for "ubuntu studio edition". ( a normal ubuntu can be turned into of course via synaptic having the metapackages installed ).

There are folks out that are highly creative on Linux. Not only playing around, but really producing content with it. And i dont mean a simple photo fixup or composing deedadee midids..

The blender foundation has released three movies that were made with only open source software, from the design to the finnish. ( Blender 2.5 will also have a game-engine, making it possible to create games and animation sequences with your humanoid 3d characters.)

Back in 2000 Linux was in its rough edges. In 2005 it was usable for everyday use. In 2011 it is a complete and user friendly windows-replacement with nothing to worry about.

No home user relies on specific win-only apps. There is for evrything a free replacement and even for the most exotic hardware a driver will be made available sooner or later as the kernel jumps monthly from one release to the other. With mono and the possibility to execute dotnet3.x code natively on Linux even those apps that adress vista/7 functions can be ported over.

Wine is so far developed that it can run complex windows-dx9-games like "the sims3" at near to nothing speed-loss. I remember when the wine team was proud that windows3.1 games were running partially.. )

Linux is developping on lightspeed- see what they have achieved in the last ten years and what Microsoft did in the same time: MS jumped from xp to vista while linux made it from a textconsole to a full fledged multimedia desktop .. The kernel from 2.4 to 2.6.37 grow from supporting pentium90 boxes with eisa and com ports to usb3.0,xbox controllers, webcams of any sorts, wireless modules that not even windows supports out the box, esata, pciexpress and all the other stuff that we have today, including senseless electro gadgets and mobile phones ( iphone sync with ubuntu is no problem any more and there is no need to have "itunes" installed .. ).

yeah. No wonder MS needs to rush out "ServicePack1" for even windows7 after not even one year of Win7s release.Especially the 64bit incarnation has bugs and errors like hell making the pc not faster but slower then the x86 version which makes perfect sense : 2 cores at full potential can handle more bugs :-]

Re: Why Linux is better
Yes but you have to 'ask' it not just click something.
To some degree of course this gives one more control.
But is more time consuming.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1248319

Depends on what you're doing. You do have a choice of GUI's in Linux, unlike Windows.

Time consuming, I'm not sure I agree, there are tricks to faster terminal usage, for example, when typing a path to somewhere you can press tab after entering the first character and it will show you a list of directories or if there is only one directory with that character, simply output the full directory name.

You can do the same in windows. Have been able to for years if you changed a reg key.

Look out for the fucktards who will say that Linux has a ton of updates, failing to realise the majority of those updates are for third-party software rather than kernel updates.

Yeah, from a long list. I love all the new graphic updates MS has been touting ... I've been doing all that since like 1997 with linux and Enlightenment.

Look up the problems you have in windows. I am sure you can find a software to shorten the slower Windows O/S. Linux does have fewer attacks, though. Ask Vishal.
