Linux sounds like DOS 1. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1257026"Sounds like" Sounds like you are guessing, my friend. Anonymous Coward User ID: 1257026 United States 02/05/2011 02:12 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Eh Try to disable UAC smart ass,so windows stops asking that. And i still like windows over linux, its easier to use, especially when gaming, since most games arent even compatible with linux.I tried it but went back to windows within a few days. Quoting: b 1127909Don't be such a dick, I see through you're UAC bullshit, I ain't talking about UAC specifically, I'm talking about everything in Windows. For example, in W7, you choose 'Shutdown' and a process won't die, it stops and asks you if you want to kill the process. Of course I fucking do! Otherwise I wouldn't have hit the 'shutdown' button. Remember, Micorsoft assumes you are an idiot, Linux assumes you are a pro. That's pure bullshit! I have Win 7 64 bit and when I click to shut down, IT FUCKING SHUTS ALLLL THE WAY DOWN. |
x User ID: 1127909 Denmark 02/05/2011 02:13 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yep but macs are Way to expensive. And i never buy brand pc's btw, only build my own,and since i play many games unsupported buy linux,it would be a waste to dual boot it since i mostly would be in windows anyways. Quoting: x 1127909Absolutely, I hate Macs, they suck really bad, but I see the reasons for them. Thing is, I use Linux a lot in my work, and it gives me much greater control over my environment that windows or Macs could ever hope to achieve. The more you use Linux, the more you understand. I knew I had to learn it, and the only way is to use it, day in day out. And I tell you what, I've never looked back! yeah but i feel i have enough control in windows as it is,if you know how to use regedit, what services to safely disable, like superfetch, win search etc,and how to use cmd,for netsh int commands you can make windows incredibly stable and much faster. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1222600 United States 02/05/2011 02:14 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Linux is a security nightmare. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1222600LOL! That is just awesome. Unlike Windows, hackers actually have access to the Linux source code! They're one step ahead of the game. And take a look at how quickly the Linux kernel codebase is changing - the diff from 2.6.36 to 2.6.37 was over 66MB... There's no way anyone is auditing all that. So please, go ahead and use Linux so you can be hacked. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1184223Steam Sins of a Solar Empire Sims 3 Mass Effect 2 World of Warcraft X3 Terran Conflict Just a few of the games i'm currently playing that work flawlessly in Windows. Thats funny cause most of that works flawlessly under linux too. X3:TC Even has a port for linux. Most steam games install and run flawlessly (no not all). Sins & Sims both work fine. I run both cause I'm an addicted gamer and yes sometimes games made for windows just won't run on linux, but most of them do with little to no tweaking. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 1253839 United States 02/05/2011 02:17 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Not yet used Android, but I hear it's pretty much a dumbed down version of Linux, which is shame. Maybe one day I'll get to try it out, who knows? Quoting: Chapman_BaxterTwo hard drives, no manual partitioning, makes life much easier. No it's a real Linux just has a lot of unused stuff removed. It doesn't use X11 but relies runs entirely on the frame buffer and the Andoid SDK for gui. I got mplayer to work on it by using the fbdev2 switch but never went so far as to decipher the sound driver which is probably one of the proprietary ones. All but a few drivers are open source and you can customize the hell out of your 'droid phone. You can put a debian image on it, mount it on loopback and chroot into it to run any non-X11 debian app like openssh-server, apache2, etc.. You can do X11 apps too if you run a vnc server for your Xdesktop and connect to it with Android' vnc client. |

If all you do is browse the internet and send a few emails, it probably has no shortcomings for you. I'm happy for you. See, it's contradictions like this that show how dysfunctional people can be. Lol...so true, though personally, I am a big fan of letting people choose whatever they want. I rarely recommend FreeBSD to anyone who isn't ready for a lot of learning. It's actually an extraordinarily simple system once you get past the learning stages. A better choice for new converts is Linux, as more things work "right out of the box" so to speak, whereas BSD means compiling in support most of the time. |

I use OpenOffice all the time now, as I'm sick of Microsofts insidious attempts to lock me in with such things are the fatally security weak .NET Framework. thank you, i be sure i have OpenOffice on that laptop! heart |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1257172 Germany 02/05/2011 02:46 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | just yesterday i was so frustrated with windows7 that I downloaded ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS (3 yrs updates!) 64bit and whiped the laptop completely except my ntfs data partition. the difference is really amazing. I have a simple and nice GUI plus (!) all of the Unix powertools via the terminal, all my music, video, data and office files can be opened and if i click on a rare videofile that isn't supported ubuntu automatically offers to download some plugins and voila it plays all in the same player . Right now i am surfing the web and recording silently internet-radio while also listening to other music, 8 different stations that go inside my music folder sorted by artist and stream.. In a few hours i have some gigs of legally aquired mp3s (rhythmbox internetradio plugin for ubu 10.04) ;-) with firefox's video downloadhelper plugin i can download all the porn and youtube vids that are in flv or mp4 format, edit them in pitivi or openshot moviemaker, add effects or plainly play them for offline usage in totem.. microsofts own xps format (vista and 7s virtual printer and pdf concurrent) is supported with "okular" viewer.. perfect. Best time to load them and batch convert into pdf which is natively supported in linux. the "me-menu" above is great for facebook/msn chat and with gwibber I can post and message pics/vids to twitter, flickr and facebook without opening their websites. just great. Toshiba Laptop 2009, all sort of goodies, 4GB Ram, Ati DX11 card = everythings working perfectly with ubuntu. |

You can even do the copy while it is still downloading as the handle is still valid wherever the file is thanks to ext fs. If you close the player before you copy the file it will be deleted by the flash player but if you copy it before you close it won't be deleted. |
