Who here was in their 20s during the 1960s?
Being young, (I'm only 24).
I have always been fascinated by the 1960s. The rebelliousness of the decade. The epic change that happened during that time.

My question? What was it like living during that time? Are their any correlations to how we live today? Being born in the 80s, I was a baby of decadence, (drugs, sex, and $$$), and feel (Hope) we experience the same amount of social change they had during the 60s.
"What can death take away from me –nothing!
What can life give to me – nothing!
All the dramas of this world is happening in front of me.
Let it happen whatever has to happen, Therefore why worry."

I was a teenager then. There were way fewer people (3 billion). But the main difference was the feeling that we really were going to change things and make them better, not only that, but that it was POSSIBLE. We were riding the crest of a wave of social change that was exciting and hopeful. Then in the 70's it all started to come apart at the seams......the kind of social change we're seeing now has an ominous feel to it, as if we are going in the wrong direction, and big time. I can't really express it better than that. We can only all keep trying to remember that love is more powerful than anything else........

I was 16 in 1969 and agree with this answer too. Looked good for a while until 70 or so when the Beatles broke up and other negative forces came back. Music and partying was my special time in my life though. Had fun and didnt get into to much trouble. Just a mellow peace love long hair having fun with my 70 mustang and gettin out of high school buzzing around Mr.Quicks hamburger joint in 72.

I was a baby during the 60's. Witnessed the funeral of a president and race riots and burning of homes (in my town)in the mid 60's.

Schools were segregated.

By the late 60's my cousins were drafted into the Viet Nam war. One was killed, one wounded and maimed for life.
There was a corner store, penny candy. Kids walked to neighborhood schools. You knew your neighbors and everyone's mom was allowed to scold you without fear of reprisal.
Parents worked hard for a living and watching TV was a privilege. My aunts and cousins were doubling duty as babysitters and no one expected payment for helping out family.

By the end of the 60's Divorce was more common. Mom's worked outside the home and older children were expected to help out younger siblings, cook and clean and oversee homework, and be little moms and dads. Most of my friends had experienced the war in a personal way. If not directly, nightly on TV.

Reality had sunk in. People tried to escape with drugs and sex in the early to mid 70's and some friends didn't live to see 30.

Those who managed to create a better future despite the turbulence maintained a value system based on personal responsibility and the wisdom of their elders.

According to the Howe-Strauss generational theory, we're most like the G.I. generation, who came of age during the Great Depression and the early part of WWII. We Millennials might have a dark future, but we'll be stubborn enough to get through it. Assuming we put our iPhones down long enough, that is.
It's good to be open-minded, just don't let your brain fall out.

Re: Who here was in their 20s during the 1960s?
I was ten in '69, but I lived with my much older sister in New Orleans who had a big house on Canal Boulevard which was a sort of giant hippy crash pad. Every evening the place was full of stoned hippies lying around listening to music and getting the munchies.

I really enjoyed myself. Everyone was real nice to me and the other kids in the house. We laughed a lot. I read Zap Comix and became adept at rolling joints and making sandwiches. I got taken to concerts at the Warehouse and remember seeing hippies tripping on acid braced against giant speakers at a Buddy Miles concert.

My younger brother and nephew and I roamed freely across the city and took the bus to the Quarter or went crabbing at lake Potchatrain.

I continued to live in such crash pads for some years to come. We read books aloud and played 3D chess. We went to a lot of concerts and discussed politics and philosophy. We went camping and skinny dipping. We would drive through the middle of the night just to have breakfast in Mexico or to wake up on the beach. sex was open and casual - no hangups or resentment. Men were gentle with the women and the women looked after the men. The sexes were genuine friends.

I have never again experienced such freedom and that period was a massive influence on my life. I learned self reliance and to accept people for what they are, regardless of race or colour or income. There was a generosity and genuine goodwill, it was spiritual in its innocence. I really miss it.

I was just a wee kid in the 60s, but do recall the feeling of unlimited possibilty at the time. Progress had been rapid over the preceeding decades (horse and carriage to landing men on the Moon - fake or not, it was cool, lol)... so just the feeling was that anything was possible, and paradise lay ahead.

I was 20 in 1969 and it was a much quieter area to live in. Neighbors were considerate, kids were not disrespectful to other adults. We played outside til dark as kids and didn't have to worry about some crazy person stealing us or worse.

Slower pace, everybody was not hooked into computers, cell phones and tv's constantly. People actually talked to each other and getting together with other people was something to look forward to.

If you want to know what the 60s was really like, there's a great film which documents what happened with the student counter culture and student revolts at that time. Aged 11 or 12, I tracked down the author and thanked him for his wonderful book!

Looks like they're doing the whole thing on youtube. Great soundtrack too.

i was very young, but i remember the moon trip.

a local burger joint gave kids a card board cut out toy
of the lunar vehicle...it was 3 dimensional.

every night, the end of the news rolled names of the killed
and missing in action soldiers in viet nam. we always looked
for relatives on the list. it was on a black and white tv.

i did'nt realize that color tvs existed until the mid 70's.

Re: Who here was in their 20s during the 1960s?
I was in my 20's in the '60's. Depended on where you live, but people felt they had to protest about Vietnam and mainly once again it was college students at Universities and in California. Of course people were concerned with the draft and some sought to enlist, but then the Russians were helping the N. Vietnameses and that could not be allowed trying to make it communists, but that is in the end what they wanted.
The fight was Hell because they had tunnels and were little and some looked like 14 year old kids but blow you up so I heard.
Back here it was protests and ya, a lot of talk, and drugs and sex and about feeling or being free and acting out. In the end a lot of it was just a bunch (at least to me) of a-holes who thought they knew everything, but in the end had not lived long enough to have any real wisdom. They thought nothing could harm them, and it all does. Some went to excess and silly things were done, but not harmful really except to theirselves. Silly ideas were coming out like how many people could fit into a telephone booth, or into a volkswagon (you know Hitler's beetle car) just to protest against that kind of stuff and music concerts and other silly things there. More people smiled or just kind of picniced around by talk and did weird things, but not all places in the Country.

Then there was the other side of the coin and the racial discrimination and segregation in the South and stuff brought to light that people had not heard about before on TV, while all the time the Cold War was going on, and if they are going to blow us up (talks were intense back then and the News) and all of that, then people were going to have fun and love and try and change the world or voice an opinion about it any which way and loose sometimes.

Then there was the Space Program and the launching of capsules orbiting the Earth and the building of a spaceship that could get up to the Moon and back.

Lots going on, and a lot of acting out through protest, sometimes getting violent and other times not but some people victimized by any of it and being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Re: Who here was in their 20s during the 1960s?
There should be a book about the 60's with experiences from all different kinds of people from all different parts of the country, or the world even.

I'm also in my 20's and although there was a lot of bad things going on then, it really seems as if there was a revolution of the mind of sorts happening... and that it sort of withered away somehow. Maybe by design, maybe naturally, I don't know.

Being in my 20s now, I feel like the people in my age group don't give a shit about anything. We're so apathetic, so willing to just let whatever happens happen, without even putting up a fight. We're just good little workers, most of us, and we think we're changing things by linking to online articles or whatever, but hardly any of us are actually out there in the real physical world making connections, meeting new people, talking for real about what's happening in the world.

I know the hippies didn't have it all right, and maybe they got too involved in drugs and sort of lost their will, but I do think they were on the right track, and it's really sad to me that all of that work was for naught.

Why not re-energize the youth? Why not show us how to continue on from where you left off? Because honestly, things do need to change, and soon, and I think most of us are lost -- maybe looking for someone to come out and help us along. We're used to having someone tell us what to do, and at least it's better to have some good influences, people who really wanted good change in the world.

Plus, you guys all had MLK and John Lennon and the like, and it seems like we don't have anyone like that these days.

I just yearn for that connection and almost universal understanding that the 60's seem to have had, or at least that they represent for me. I'm sick of this system, and the rules and paperwork, and how everything, even things that should be so simple are convoluted and complicated to ridiculous levels.

Anyway, end rant.

Dear John, (I always wanted to write a Dear John letter)

I know many in your age bracket and maybe a little older. They are very much aware, interested and engaged in what is going on with the world today.

You just have to find like minded individuals to hang with instead of self-absorbed types.

Yes, the sixties were simpler times. I can remember going to protests thinking we were going to change the world. We didn't.

I see my own offspring involved in today's issues. I hope they have better luck than we did.

You are right , things need to change. Our generation is winding down and it is now up to your generation to put things right.

No pressure.

Good luck.
