***1' st M-Class Flare of the year!***
Solar X-rays are active. A M1 solar flare occured at 0103 UT Jan28. A CME was also ejected but does not seem to be Earth directed.

I will be posting video for those of you that enjoy these subjects.

Bigger than normal Solar Max!....more global warming?

Lower than normal Solar Max?.....mini ice age?

All scientific dat...out the window/ watch and see!

Here is the first vid.

This is the latest data from the NASA's SOHO C2 cam...

the cme is still blowing out from sunspot 1149. Again, this CME accompanied the M-1 Flare.

Amazing how we keep lucking out!

Anyone that keeps an eye out for the CME's know that the "Spots"...keep blowing before, and after they would have an affect on us.

Yup checked 1'st..I always do. However, you have do do the work, or let it die. Simply stating a fact, does not make a very good thread.

I could post facts as threads all day long..I am sure it would not be well appreciated here....so I willl stick with my forte.

This is the latest!

This is a nice representation of this CME, as seen from the perspective of our own NASA SOHO C2.

CME012811

I know that there is a lot of confusion for people between NASA's SOHO, and STEREO satellites. SOHO, unlike the STEREO satelites is in an optical telescope that looks "head on" at the sun; between the Sun, and the Earth. The Stereo Satellites (two of them), are like the eyes on your head, in that they are positioned laterally; one to our left view...catching that hemisphere of the sun with a "sneak peek" to what is comming, and the other gving a look around to our fading sun spots, coronal holes, and whispy solar filaments.

Our upgrade to SOHO if you will is SDO...wonderful and amazing!

Re: ***1' st M-Class Flare of the year!***
This really is a fairly large CME. Remember, a Flare is not a CME (Coronal Mass Ejection). A Solar Flare is not necessarily needed for a CME. A CME can be caused by a collapsing filament; for example. The radiation burst from a flare arrives here on Earth at the speed of light! Appprox nine minutes after a flare, be it a B, C, M, or X class flare; it arrives approximatly nine minutes later here on Earth.

The material ejected from the Sun during a CME is totally different in it's nature, and material...."material"...being the key here.

Flares produce light.

CME's are material as well as light in nature.

While waiting for updates, I could not help but be amazed by this spectacular phenomena, comming out of Nebraska.

A thread unto it's self for some, I am sure!

"V-TOPPED LIGHT PILLARS: Light pillars are a common sight around cities in winter. Urban lights bounce off ice crystals in the air, producing tall luminous columns sometimes mistaken for auroras. But the light pillars Mike Hollingshead saw last night near a corn mill in Nebraska were decidely uncommon. "They had V-shaped tops," he explains, "and some of the Vs were nested." Here is what he saw:
lightpillars

"These light pillars are not just rare, they are exceptional!" declares atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "Ordinary pillars are produced by plate-shaped ice crystals roughly half way between you and the light source. These ones are different. Their rarely seen flared tops show that they were made by column-shaped crystals drifting slowly downwards and aligned horizontal by air resistance."

"The flares are a form of the upper tangent arcs that we sometimes see in daytime halo displays," he continues. "But even more exotic, some flares have a second one nested within them! Some ice crystal columns do not rotate but instead keep two of their prism faces improbably horizontal to give us the very uncommon Parry arcs of solar halo displays. The nested flares here are amazing and probably the light halo equivalent of Parry arcs."

DOUBLE ERUPTION: Jan. 28th began with not one but two major eruptions on the sun. Separated by more than a million kilometers, the two blasts occurred almost simultaneously on opposite corners of the solar disk. Click on the image to view a movie recorded by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory:
doublecme
On the lower left, a magnetic filament became unstable and erupted, hurling a portion of itself into space. On the upper right, departing sunspot 1149 produced an M1-class solar flare and a bright coronal mass ejection (SOHO movie). Is this all a big coincidence? Maybe not. New research shows that eruptions on the sun can "go global" with widely separated blasts unfolding in concert.

These blasts are going to miss in concert, too. Plasma clouds ejected by the two eruptions will sail wide of our planet, one on the left and one on the right. No Earth-effects are expected; maybe next time.

I have to appologize for the pixelation/ distortion of this .Gif...downsizing a 4.5m image to 200 kb takes a toll!

Give it a few more years folks!...they will have your cameras taking pics in terabytes...claiming it improves the quality of the photo!

What ever happened to cities running on 16 meg mainframe super computers!....cool rooms, gigantic disk drives, and punch cards?
