Re: Breaking News! New Sony PSP has a quadcore CPU and GPU!
There are rumors floating around that it's either gonna be $299 or $349

I really like where handhelds are going and the PSP2 has an awesome starting lineup, not to mention who wouldn't want a handheld Modern Warfare game to play others online with??? Looks damn fun.

That is just a placeholder price, and not the official price. They should announce the actual price and information about battery life in a few days/weeks.

Well they are trying to change stuff too, as you cannot change the battery, and the current battery life is very low, that why it has to be tethered.

Re: Breaking News! New Sony PSP has a quadcore CPU and GPU!
the number of cores doesn't mean much, design is what matter most in cpu architecture.
if you are dumb engineer you can design a 532 core cpu that still can't match a commodore 64. the psp quad cpu clocked at its nominal speed has less processing power than the, cheap, dual core intel atom that you can find in many netbooks and other machines.
number of cores is only useful to hype up and to fool mods in to pin relatively irrelevant threads.
and for 'gpu'...haven't not all actual hand held consoles one? and this one powervr so don't expect much more power than a original xbox.

Re: Breaking News! New Sony PSP has a quadcore CPU and GPU!
This is badass. But of course the ps3 is an 8 core so this seems natural. What really raises my eyebrow is a quadcore video card. That itself is revolutionary. I can only imagine having two of those in a pc in sli mode and a new 8 core amd bulldozer at like 3.6 ghz. Throw in a 512 gigabyte solid state hdd and 16 gbs or ram and you would have some serious fuckin pc firepower.

yea all that fuckin firepower to trawl glp all day...

More cores = more efficient energy consumption, more battery life since it can shut down cores not in use. It should also be more processing efficient since all the processing tasks will not be drowned in just one core.

They demoed the potential of it though, and I am impressed by the graphics. It has graphics akin first-gen X360 games. With optimization I'm sure the graphics can be even better.

Re: Breaking News! New Sony PSP has a quadcore CPU and GPU!
lol you are an idiot.

This psp would be one of the most suffisticated handheld devices ever created. With a computing power of a small PC and an enormous graphics power.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1035843

It's just a glorified Mario from 10 - 15 years ago.

Stroke the buttons, screen and case all you like. Have the graphics as real as you like, but it's just another video game as seen 100 times before. Get over it!

more cores doesn't always mean better effiency in processing and consumption. intel atom has 2 cores and it outperforms the arm.

No contest, ARM CPUs are not as powerful as Atom CPUs. Atom CPUs are designed for netbooks/laptops, or cheap desktops, and ARM CPUs are for mobile/cellphone devices, or really cheap netbooks.

so, we can conclude that number of cores doesn't mean much then?

No, but we can conclude that you can't compare 2 different brands that have different architecture. On the other hand, you can compare a quadcore ARM with a dualcore ARM, or a single core Atom with a dualcore Atom.

if we can't compare them, why the arm guys did it? lol

Call me silly but any game that is going to look that good is going to be 4gig plus. A bitch to download. I want to see some sort of hard media. PSPgo was a failure because it was download only.

The video is impressive for a couple of reasons. The first is that browser rendering on both machines is comparable, but the Cortex-A9 dev machine does not have a graphics processor while the Atom does. The fact the A9 almost keeps up shows you the rock-solid performance this chip has.
 Quoting:

They (ARM) are trying to prove that their technology is getting better (in other words, almost up to par with Atom chipsets).
