Video of the moon showing it is horizontally dark - AT THE TOP! | |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 1222789 United States 01/23/2011 11:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A few things...totally ignore the background noise. My son made this video and he and his brother and friend would not be quiet. Quoting: Mother MaryThe video is almost 4 minutes long so you can see the movement of the moon rising in the sky behind the trees in the video. (Also shows the camera is not turned around 180 degrees or anything.) I have no idea if I can embed this video (It is on photobucket) but if someone else can embed it, thank you in advance. I am 36 and I swear I have not ever seen the moon do this like this, it was always vertical. I don't know what is up with it. [link to s1140.photobucket.com] the proofs in the pudding |

The Moon and everything else in the sky appears to rotate every time they are up. They have to because your perspective of them changes as you are on a round, rotating Earth. |

When high in the sky you are looking South (assuming you are in the northern hemispheres). When it sets you are looking West. Your perspective changes because you are looking different directions. The terminator is always perpendicular to the source of illumination. Hold up a baseball. Which way does the shadow run on it? Is there any way you can make the shadow move OTHER than in direct relation to the light that falls on it? No! So what would be required for the Moon's terminator to be perfectly vertical? Why, it would require the Sun be an equal distance above the horizon! Since the Sun is rarely out at night, this is obviously incorrect. |

Could be something else, however, I have noticed this week the moon phases are now going in a vertical direction, not horizontal like it's been All My Life. And the dark part isn't so dark, it's more brown/orange color, glaringly weird this morning, easier to see in the daylight. This is from Gulf Coast vantage point, Texas. |

DON'T view the Moon once and try to compare it with your expectations. JUST do this; view the moon several times tonight, over the longest time span you can manage. You will discover the line of the terminator rotating slowly THROUGHOUT THE NIGHT. Roughly speaking, imagine the Moon is a big clock face, only instead of the hands moving, the hour hand stays stationary and the face moves under it. That's the amount of movement over time you should observe in the Moon over the course of a night's observing. |

We all definitely know that the moon doesn't rotate, hence the jokes about the dark side of the moon that we never see. I know there was one shot where he zoomed in on the moon and you could see the details of the moon pretty well. Besides that...why when he zooms in sometimes is there a greenish halo around the moon?
