China to pay for language programs in U.S. schools?
[link to www.cnn.com]

Is this going to be a growing trend??

"A school district outside Columbus, Ohio, is on track to receive more than $1 million in federal grant money for its Chinese arts and language program. But what's really caught people's attention is the $30,000 that the district is getting from the government of China.

The Gahanna-Jefferson School District began teaching Mandarin Chinese four years ago and since then, the number of students in the program has increased from about 40 to 350.

Administrators felt China should have a home in their suburban Ohio school system since the communist country has the world's second-largest economy and is becoming increasingly relevant."
There is no greater sorrow than to recall happiness in times of misery.

Why is it so disturbing to you guys that kids are being encouraged to learn another language, especially considering all of the business the US does with China. It might even help your kids find a better job some day.

And 30k$ is hardly "taking over".

This is why I'm ashamed to travel the world as an American... If only everyone knew how the world views us.

Not disturbing, what is disturbing to me is that a foreign Gov't is co-sponsoring our children's education.

Yup more or less the same over here in the Netherlands. I had to learn 3 foreign languages.

1- French
2- German
3- English (already got it since elementary school)

At Gymnasium (highest form of high school in the Netherlands) high school students also get Latin, furthermore other kids learned other languages as part of the preferred school curriculum (mainly Spanish).

I feel left out that I am not from the generation that is getting Mandarin.

"Knowing Chinese may open doors for students later in life. Moreover, the Chinese government is actually sending teachers worldwide to help students around the globe master the language. Lastly, the Times reports that a joint program by the College Board and Hanban, a language council affiliated with the Chinese Education Ministry, has sent hundreds of American educators to visit schools in China since 2006.

I applaud the move by American educators to include Chinese language instruction in public schools. In November, I had the opportunity to teach fourth graders at a school where the predominantly Latino student body is already well versed in English and Spanish. Yet, thanks to school administrators, these bilingual children are trying their hand at a third language--Chinese. If they continue to be instructed in the language, they could very well emerge from high school trilingual."

Personally, I think that the China is just trying to reach out to spread its cultural identity through language, not much unlike America does through the Peace Corps.

It's an attempt at peace and tolerance. hf

Since the job market is so down, just take a quick look at most of the 75k+ a year jobs. Most are now requiring that you speak Mandarin as a second language..

Lol, I meant 'China' without the 'the'. I had originally written 'the Chinese government', but that makes it seem intrusive.

Re: China to pay for language programs in U.S. schools?
Good friend in HS was always into languages. I mean like all languages... he even made up his own. His early aspirations were to be a translator for the UN. He went to the schools for it, has his masters, lived overseas for some while and now teaches foreign languages in the public school system of Atlanta.
