And so it begins...
They should take the warning labels off of everything and let stupidity sort itself out.

I prefer the term "18 molar sulfuric acid" myself, but maybe that's too much a of cliche as well...

Re: Anyone Else Getting Sick of the Word "Vitriol"?
There is an author who used that word, to describe the black evil "acid" which orcs or similar creatures would hurl, at the righteous. So the larger concept is "acidic, directed splash-verbage" or that essence which is filled with hate for a thing.

This author who has contributed to the word "vitriol" wrote six books about a world where such an essence, exists. You need a dictionary to read these novels at first, because of all the new words in there, but the reading gets easier as the concepts are understood.

In the books, the evil orc-like ones, stir up pots of "vitriol", a black essence of evil.

Pots of evil goo which then act like acid when flung onto castle walls. You know, fantasy sci-fi is the most global touchstone for "harry potter" type words like this. See that this is the Harry Potter world spilling out unto the "Muggles"... I am saying that Harry Potter is like Thomas Covenant, and that their discoveries and characters, are similar. So there is a connection between the Donaldson idea of vitriol as cultivated-evil acid, which required a triangulate formation of focused evil behind the one master-orc who holds the metal shard out of which the acid pours. So it is a labored, hierarchical focusing of evil intent. Now contrast this to the image of the Harry Potter crew stirring their magic cauldrons at magic-college. Hopefully you are aware of what the kids are reading and seeing?

So the concept of vitriol is valid on a variety of levels and conceptual frameworks. And it is all about the power of words, for what else to we "hex" and "vex" each other with, but speech? Also please note: There are no debates, no televised discussion between the plebes. So in the end, you will have to develop lawyer-level mastery of your language in order to just survive. If they were having televised debates, then you would not be ping-ponged by the media (aka commercial injection vehicle). But please see what you do not see. Let us not fling vitriol at one another, let's spill it out onto the ground and discuss the properties of how the orcs brew that shit up, cos its nasty shit!

I don't watch the tube that much anymore, and I flat out can't watch any news, but this seems to be a trend. The word I remember them overusing at one point was "nightmare".
Too bad. I used to like the word vitriol.

they still use that one quite a lot
especially coupled with 'scenario'
and 'ordeal'

So why can't I touch it?
