Re: Snow from a clear sky
I'm in Las Vegas and it was snowing in flurries like that a few days ago. It was mostly sunny outside about 38 degrees. The snow was being blown off the mountains and carried over the valley. You could see it in spots where it cold enough before it melted. That a side the weather seems wrong this winter. I don't remember the flow of moisture being pushed so far south and coming up through LA. I always remembered it being pushed through central/northern California. I could be wrong but I think the Jet Streams/Ocean Currents are way off this year.

I went outside for a few minutes just now. Clear day 12 degrees and snow is melting, but it is also snowing at the same time. Snow should not be melting at 12 degrees, and with no clouds there shouldn't be snow falling.
Took a pic with my phone to see if the light snow would show, and it does.
I'll upload the pic in a minute.

When I grew up in snowy areas, it would snow all the time from "clear" skies... not every abnormal when it is like 10 degrees and crap...

Odd enough, but the snow on the trees melted within a few hrs from last nights snowfall. And it is 12 degrees,.... 14 now.

NiN,
Have you noticed this in the past few years at all?
 Quoting:

Nope, not at all!
For January usually it is super cold, very cold winds that around this time of year usually make the wind chills below 0 with winds coming down from the north, sun is not warm, even when it does come out. nothing melts until spring starts rolling around. sometime around beginning of May.

I grew up in California and cant stand the cold what so ever. I have lived in Michigan since 2000 and I always have to hybernate durring the winter cause of the extreem cold, but not this year.
I'm telling ya, when it says its 19 out, and the snow is melting with the sun shining... it is NOT 19 out.
Feels way warmer. I can't explaine it

Yeah, I think the Sun's frequency has changed. Gone are the days of our big, friendly, yellow ball.

Now we seem to have an angry white Sun.

I went back out after posting and watched the clouds begin to come in. As soon as they blocked the sun, the snow stopped melting/reducing on the ground and wood pile.

Temps even higher now than it was when the snow was melting.
The reduction was positively the sun, as the temp higher but cloud cover stopped that reduction process.

I noticed this past year that hurt, not burn, stinging pain until I had a heavy base tan. I believe this is the same effect only winter now.

Not saying the sun is brighter/whiter/or closer. I am saying the spectrum has varied since 2009.

i lived in the interior of alaska for 26 years. sounds normal to me. welcome to the new sub-arctic.

Maybe not new there, odd, but believable seeing as it's happening here now.

All air holds moisture, but just not used to having snow melting below freezing temps and snow from a blue sky is new to me.

I didn't even respond to that lake issue as it was too damn funny. Not to mention there are no true large lakes even close. More like large trout ponds, and they have been frozen for months.

What I bolded is precisely what I have noticed the last couple of years.

I spend a lot of time outside and never have burned, just 'browned'. Last June, on a canoe trip in full Sun, I developed 1000's of 'micro-blisters' I didn't really know what they were til I got home and looked it up.

I do think the radiation that is reaching us is different than it was 5 years ago. Whether it be a frequency shift or a change in the atmosphere, I don't know. But my experience tells me it is different.

I was in Memphis until June this past summer. We have a reverse of the seasons there as far as the time line is concerned. Mphs = 9 months summer & 3 months modified summer. Wisconsin has 9 months winter and 3 months modified winter. chuckle
I also spend the main part of each day in that sun, fishing, or just hanging out with friends. The 1st of April I also got those 1000s of small red bumps after being out only one day and only a few hrs. It hurt for several days, but not like a sunburn. Sunburn covers an entire exposed area like a sheet, and peels after. This didn't peel and was only spots but thousands. Like the individual cells had exploded from the few hrs I was out in that 1st morning. Interesting that you also described the exact thing I witnessed in Memphis, up here in Wisconsin. I did have a great tan by the time I got here in June and the sun no longer bothered me. It did to all those I know and or met up here then.

Yea, but there were no clouds at all. And the melting of the previous snow at the same time frame was the true kicker for me. It was 12 degrees and the snow was melting off the many vehicles/wood piles/& trees @ 12 and it was snowing from a blue sky at the same time.

Once a few clouds did roll in and blocked the sun, the snow stopped melting, the snowfall increased drastically also as expected.

Sun has been like this for almost 3 years now, blinding white. If you have some pictures you have taken, look to see if you think the sun has changed.

It was the drive home from work back in 2007, that i was blinded like the old camera light bulb flashes where you keep seeing the flash way after the picture.

Good to know more and more people are seeing the change in the sun.

I live in Michigan, last week it was way below the freezing point out at a clod 14F with clear skys and sunny. The sun felt very very warm and snow was melting off my roof so fast it was filling the gutters and pouring out in a slow flow. How the hell can this be when its only 14 out?
I even had to come in and double check the net weather channels.
This has happened 3 times since. Below freezing out, snow melting, sun feels hot.
wtf

By that theory snow should be continually melting as long as the sun is out, regardless of temp. That would leave continual thaw in the day and freeze at night, regardless of temps. Again, not the case though,.... is it.

Re: Snow from a clear sky
Infernal, have you read any on the boeing guys thread?
i was looking around GLP at the older threads and came across something in this thread that stood out.
Ever hear of the permafrost melting?

"There's a thread pinned on here right now about permafrost melting. That's public knowledge. Why it's melting when the temps are below freezing is not understood."
Thread: All I can say is, many of you are close !!!! (Page 6)

Now i am on a search to find out more about Global Solar Radiation and how it plays a roll in the permafrost melting at below freezing temps.

(if you google search "permafrost melting solar rays" you should see a PDF right at the top named "[PDF] Global Solar Radiation, Soil Temperature and Permafrost)

Based on what i have started finding, it would appear that a increase in solar rays from the sun is playing a big roll in our snow melting when it is below freezing outside.
Lots of searching to dig through, so ill post anything interesting and relevant that i find :)

You mean, you hope it is snow.

I'm also in Wisconsin,....
It looks and feels like snow. I damn sure not about to taste it, that's fer damn sure. Snowed last night, that snow on the ground is still there as the ground is frozen. But the snow that was on the trees a few hrs ago is now gone.

I just found it wild to have some melting (not on the ground) and snow from a clear sky at the same time.
 Quoting:

i recall when it snowed here in East TN 3 weeks ago, the snow melted the next day after it quit snowing. Then the temps were upper 20's, blasting sun and it all melted. I think for us here, it had to do with the intensity of the sun. Although the temp outside was upper 20's, the sun was so hot and intense it made it comftorble to be outside in the lawn chair playing ball with my dog.

I remember thinking to myself "how weird is this, it just snowed yesterday and now it's melting so fast, plus I am outside and enjoying the sun although it is so cold out"

It was weird here.
