Snow from a clear sky
I went outside for a few minutes just now. Clear day 12 degrees and snow is melting, but it is also snowing at the same time. Snow should not be melting at 12 degrees, and with no clouds there shouldn't be snow falling.
Took a pic with my phone to see if the light snow would show, and it does.
I'll upload the pic in a minute.

Re: Snow from a clear sky
Physics.

For snow to form, both the temperature in the air needs to be at least 0c, and the temperature on the ground 0c.

In short, the ground is warmer than the air [which is possible via winds after a warmer front]. That is why the snow on the ground is melting, but there is snow falling. Once the ground cools, it will settle again.

Odd enough, but the snow on the trees melted within a few hrs from last nights snowfall. And it is 12 degrees,.... 14 now.

It looks and feels like snow. I damn sure not about to taste it, that's fer damn sure. Snowed last night, that snow on the ground is still there as the ground is frozen. But the snow that was on the trees a few hrs ago is now gone.

I just found it wild to have some melting (not on the ground) and snow from a clear sky at the same time.

Yea Jeremiah,
I'm positive. The snow on the roof has been gone since new years eve. Metal roofs don't hold snow as long as shingles.
I was also away from the house when I snapped that pic in the middle of an open area.

It is very odd.

Maybe not new there, odd, but believable seeing as it's happening here now.

All air holds moisture, but just not used to having snow melting below freezing temps and snow from a blue sky is new to me.

Re: Snow from a clear sky
I live in Michigan, last week it was way below the freezing point out at a clod 14F with clear skys and sunny. The sun felt very very warm and snow was melting off my roof so fast it was filling the gutters and pouring out in a slow flow. How the hell can this be when its only 14 out?
I even had to come in and double check the net weather channels.
This has happened 3 times since. Below freezing out, snow melting, sun feels hot.
wtf

The state looks to be about 90% covered with clouds, perhaps some snow is falling at a high elevation far from you and a few flakes are drifting your way?

As for the snow melting, I noticed a couple of sunny, but cold (below freezing) days here where the snow 'reduced'. Kind of like maybe the Sun's rays were effecting the snow differently. And when everything is covered with snow, its not the ground melting it!

You touched an the area I was thinking about when I noticed the snow melting here at 12degrees. I instantly thought what about the Sun's spectrum could cause this? Odd is the best I can come up with on that.

Reduced is a good term for what occurred on the ground as there is still plenty there, but not as deep, and in a semi packed state where no traffic is evident in the field.

Yeah, I think the Sun's frequency has changed. Gone are the days of our big, friendly, yellow ball.

Now we seem to have an angry white Sun.
