Funny experience that made me realize I NEED A GUN!
My dh is in NM for business, so last night I was home alone. It's about 9pm and suddenly my dogs start barking like crazy. I get up and head into the living room and notice that the door nob is moving. Stand there a few secs, the nob moves again. We live in a rural area, not many people drop by without calling first.

I peek through the peep hole but can't see anybody. The whole time the door nob is still being turned. Finally decide to brave it and look out the window next to the door. There is NOBODY there. But the freaking nob is still moving. Now this was probably a stupid thing to do, but I opened the door.

Standing in front of me, was the stray cat we feed. He was using his paws to rattle the door nob. The little bugger scared the crap out of me. I almost fell over laughing.

I got him fed and sat back down and realized, what if it had not been the cat. It's just the kiddo and me, my neighbors to the right are an elderly couple. He's a disabled vet. Neighbors to the left is a young guy with schizophrenia and his mom. There is nobody across the street from me. If it had been an intruder, well we all see the news and know what can happen

Damn I felt so stupid.

I suggest a nice shot gun, you don't have to practice much just point and shoot!

The cat is no longer a stray, you fed it, now it is yours.

You live in Arizona and you don't have a gun?! Your stray could have been MS-13.

Yeah, get a shotgun. Hurry.

Yes, I've heard shotguns are good for protection.

The kitty comes and goes, sometimes we don't see him for days at a time. He won't let us touch him. We do plan on trying to catch him and get him fixed.

If you had a gun you might have accidentally shot the poor little bugger through the door while yelling 'say hello to my little friend'. chuckle

A Glock 45 ACP is nice IMO. Get used to the kick, a few rounds, and you are good to go. At close range, as in the case of an attacker, the Glock will do massive tissue damage which will stop the attacker in his tracks. You should be thankful living in a state like AZ! No need to register or get permission to exercise your Second Amendment right! I used to live in IL, now live in CO. I hated that FOID card I had to get in IL. Please Mr. Government, may I exercise my Second Amendment right? Not here in CO! Good luck to you OP!

If you ever feel you are vulnerable, prepare.

Take a self-defense course.

Take a firearm course.

Get a handgun and get a shotgun. And then practice. Develop a plan with a few contingencies, and then practice some more.

My Mother is 30 minutes away doing 80mph. I gave her a shotgun last year, and recently gave her a .38 Special Revolver. She keeps them unloaded, but does have 'Bear Spray' unlocked and ready to go on her nightstand.

Good Luck OP. Preparation is the key!

Glad it was a cat and not a little gray alien or two.

You don't need buckshot for a shotgun for home defense, btw.

Standard birdshot will suffice.

Anyone that doesn't beleive, set a 2x12 plank as a target 10 or 12 feet away and shoot it with a load of birdshot--it'll blow it apart.

Birdshot won't go thru walls in a home situation as easily as buckshot, so if things get fancy you don't have to worry so much about wounding innocents in the next room.

Re: Funny experience that made me realize I NEED A GUN!
Azul...at least get something for those times when dh is off on business. He will most likely agree. Take some gun-safety lessons and training. That is the responsible thing to do and it is well worth it to learn about the most trivial issues of gun ownership.

You will be exposed to several different types of guns which can help you determine which type you would feel most comfortable owning.

A gun that is safely stored and safely used, by a trained and knowledgeable gun owner, rarely if ever, results in a worse case scenario.

But don't own a gun out of fear. Own it because you are responsible for the safety and well-being of your family.

Sorry for the rant...but this is one of those matters which is extremely important.

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!
