Bangs big and small in cosmic origins debate
There's an idea in the area of physics known as quantum mechanics that suggests one can't measure a phenomenon without influencing the result.

It turns out that sometimes this same "observer effect" crops up in science journalism.

The story goes that, right now, there is a quiet debate happening that could have implications for how the Universe as we know it came to be - and what came before.

And the debate is being driven in part by the fact that news outlets including BBC News took a small peek into the machine of modern-day astrophysics.

Well, well, well, my friend. It seems they are stating the obvious.

"But as far as the public is concerned, in a situation like [this one] the publicity may happen too fast to get out the news that there were big errors with the work. Once the errors are found, the story has died down and the media have moved on."*

Or so they hope. Makes one wonder, heh?

If these scientists would explain things in layman terms instead of speaking as if we are all rocket scientists...

You know Hans, I get on google earth and see what the satellites took pictures of and wonder of wonders, what it that I'm seeing. I visited the forum there and found it quite lacking. Just what are people suppose to think? And it doesn't help when vast areas have fabric missing, or showing up elsewhere. Makes one wonder...

That would be the job of educators and science journalists.
This happens to be a rather complex subject, and the article isn't that bad.
Some subjects can only be simplified so much before they become meaningless.

Some scientists are excellent communicators however, Penrose himself for example.

The article is actually more about the influence of media attention, the 'observers', on the scientific debate, then cosmology.
