We've been invited to a party tomorrow night, and we're having the 'traditional' Seven Fishes.

My family never had the seven fishes on Christmas Eve, but many of our Italian neighbors did. Apparently, a lot of people have never even heard of this.

This is my first time.

I've never had fried smelt or Baccala (salted cod fish) before. There will be variations of calimari, scungili, anchovies...

Anyone ever have this dinner?

I'm excited.

Do you live in NJ? I know lots of people (of Italian ancestry) who do the seven fishes thing, but many of them do Lobster, Shrimp, Cod, Flounder, etc.,. Friends from Italy have never heard of it, but think it only occurs there near the water, where people live on fish. Whatever, enjoy, sounds like fun!

I've never had this but I just heard about this last week.

Back home, we usually roast a whole pig over an open fire to go with our yellow rice and pigeon peas.

Delicious.

We've been to the pig roasts around here ... yummy...

The seven fishes were awesome!

Yes I live in NJ and that's where this was.

Edited to Add: The family who had the dinner hails from Calabria ... he said it's so close to Sicily you can hear Sicilian cowbells if the wind is right, lol.
