While I was wrapping gifts today with the kids and husband out of the house I had the History Channel on. I kept thinking "holy crap when are they going to give a link to GLP?".

Here was today's line-up. [link to www.history.com]

Nostradamus Effect: Da Vinci's Armageddon

Was Leonardo Da Vinci, one of history's great philosophers, artists and engineers, a secret prophet? And did he envision world destruction of such biblical proportions that it haunted him until the end of his days? Clues hidden in Da Vinci's paintings, his re-discovered prophetic "riddles" and the events of his life now suggest that he, too, was influenced by the Nostradamus Effect. 400 years ago, Da Vinci may have intercepted signs and warnings as early as his boyhood. He witnessed a devastating flood that ravaged his city and that seems to have haunted him with depictions of a watery apocalypse similar to the biblical great flood. Are the clues Da Vinci hid within his writings, his sketches and his masterpieces, all a secret code pointing to a great deluge that will wipe out all mankind?

Nostradamus Effect: 2012 Extinction

The Maya, an ancient South American culture, predicted that time would end in a violent apocalypse on December 21, 2012. They created an elaborate astronomical calendar called "The Long Count," which stops abruptly in 2012. This date, which is also the winter equinox, coincides with an incredibly rare galactic alignment that happens once every 26,000 years. What did the Mayans think would happen when their calendar ended? And were they joined by other cultures--from different parts of the world and in different centuries--all pointing to 2012 as a calamitous end time? The Hopi Indians and Eastern Hindus have similar calendars, which are remarkably synchronous. One counter-culture mystic even uses an Ancient Chinese philosophy to unlock the key to a 2012 prophecy. Nostradamus himself suggests the world is headed toward a coming cataclysm. What can we do to head the warning of the Mayan apocalypse?

What have past acts of destruction taught us about what will happen to mankind after the apocalypse?… TVPG | CC
After Armageddon

What have past acts of destruction taught us about what will happen to mankind after the apocalypse? Is it inevitable that disaster will someday strike America on an unprecedented level? How has history prepared us? History's most dramatic events--Hiroshima, 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and others--are examined and analyzed with hard data gathered from their massive aftereffects. The disappearance of water and food supplies, the effects of deteriorated sanitation and health care on the remaining population, and the increased use of violence as a means of survival--all illustrate how societies have responded and survived.

Yeah I've noticed that too. We watch a lot of History Chanel at home. Funny story, my husband 70yr old aunt was visiting from NY for a week and she got hooked on Ancient Aliens.

I think many people are waking up to subject that would have been considered lunatic fringe just a few years ago.

For most people, it's a fleeting novelty; for glpers, it's a way of life.

Plus, I think maybe people like Dan Brown made it "ok" to read up on these things.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

It is interesting to watch the History Channel and then look to see what else is on; last night "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" showed on Encore, there were many alien themes on last night on different channels.

Have you noticed more people in real life talking about "end of the world" scenarios or aliens? I don't even bring the subjects up other people start talking about them; I kind of blink a couple of times (in shock) and then start a discussion.

Here's the forumula for a History channel show.

1st 10 minutes - tell you everything that was in the promo.

Next half hour - drag out "experts" like MLH, to verify their claims.

Next 10 minutes - introduce doubts.

LAST 10 MINUTES - INFORM YOU THAT YOU WERE A FUCKING DOUCHEBAG FOR BELIEVING ANYTHING IN THE FIRST 50 MINUTES.

Once you accept this, you won't need to watch History channel.

Have you ever taken any of the information gleaned from the shows and done a search for veracity of the information?

If so, could you post which shows were purely disinformation based on your research? I will grant that most of their shows are very theatrical and pander to people with low levels of reading comprehension therefore their presentation comes away as disinformation. I have researched some of their shows, especially the Nostradamus shows and found that the vast majority of information is correct.

You need to reread what I said. I said nothing as to the truthiness of the content. I'm telling you how HC writes the shows.

Their "intent" may be to inform you, but the network REQUIRES them to introduce doubt and often ridicule of controversial topics. And, as it happens, it's always at the end of the show.

Why would they introduce doubt or dissenting views when they have a captive audience (lapping it all up) to sell crap to.

Remember, it's a FOR PROFIT business.

Sorry, I did misinterpret what you initially posted.

I do find the ridicule part or doubt as part of presenting both sides of the issue; somewhat of a devil's advocate position. But then there are times that the ridicule is uncalled for and over the top, when that happens I think of Gandi's saying:

"First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win."
