Antarctic Cruise ship on way to Argentina with 88 American's on board looses engine and communication, watch the video! 89 passengers on board, no injuries. Windows broke as waves went OVER the ship...my goodness. That's the cruise out of hell. It is currently "limping" back to its port. Was not clear to me where they are supposed to arrive. It's an Antarctic Cruise. |

Spent several years exactly there - very nasty place, and not for bordeline stability gin palaces. Worst body of water in the world Quoting: SEADOG 870199I've been in some rough sea's myself, that one however beats it all. Doesn't look like fun...can you imagine, a wave so high going OVER this huge cruise ship? I'd crap my pants. |

Antarctic Cruise ship on way to Argentina with 88 American's on board looses engine and communication, watch the video! [link to news.yahoo.com] Here the link for the story. Snippet: "BUENOS AIRES – A large wave slammed into an Antarctic cruise ship with 88 American passengers and 77 crew members aboard, but the ship's crew overcame minor damage and was heading safely back to its scheduled port on Wednesday, the vessel's operator said. The Clelia II declared an emergency on Tuesday, reporting it had suffered engine damage amid heavy seas and 55 mph (90 kph) winds when it was northeast of the South Shetland Islands and about 500 miles (845 kilometers) from Ushuaia, the Argentine Navy said in a statement." |

All 88 passengers are Americans, and there are 77 crew!!! That's almost 1 man per person...interesting. Only 1 crew has minor injuries, everybody else is fine. |

Antarctic Cruise ship on way to Argentina with 88 American's on board looses engine and communication, watch the video! I worked as navigator on Falklands patrol ships. That isnt even a real bad day. Nasty place and not for Caribbean gin palaces - they are going to lose one soon. I have spent weeks hove-to under worse than that, in a ship that is well accustomed. |

Quoting: SEADOG 870199Yes, I guess what you did you could compare to the seas those guys in the "Deadliest Catch" encountered. And those are ships made for these kind of rough seas. This boat was hit by that wave and the glass/windows broke...What's a foofoo cruise liner doing in this area anyhow? Ok the captain said it never happened before, but I wouldn't go on this route after seeing this. PASS! |

We were the only SAR in the region, and there is no way one could put a RIB in the water. Worst body of water in the world, and \I think I have sailed most of the others: Bering Sea, North Sea, Hecate straits, Southern Ocean. Not a place to play tourista IMO |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1163399If a wave so high going over the boat smashes windows etc...I'm pretty sure they were a little scared by then... The reporter kept saying how beautiful the ship is, and that this is an expensive or exclusive cruise. Me thinks odd 88 american passengers, and 77 crew. Weird...some kind of elite? Well, they got their money's worth on that ride for sure. |

Antarctic Cruise ship on way to Argentina with 88 American's on board looses engine and communication, watch the video! Watch this report, just happened a few hours ago. The captain was quoted as saying that it made this same cruise 159 times and never encountered such high waves, 30ft. The guy on the rescue ship talking said it is like running the ship into a 3 story building each time. Quoting: BabsiThey lost engine and communication power...bobbing in the sea like a cork. Crazy! [link to news.yahoo.com] Hi Babsi. Sorry by getting off topic, but were you succeed on contacting prof. Shaheen??? "Do or do not. There is no try." (Yoda) |

Well, they got their money's worth on that ride for sure. These cruises are VERY expensive - usually a part of an "around the world" package. One crew per passie is normal - usually under 100 passies. Boats are usually converted Soviet science vessels. This one was not. \south georgia is worth the trip. \\\arguably, the most beautiful place on earth. Getting there, and back, is yet another story. I will post you an old one, very old |
