Prescription drugs did not help, and some of the prescription meds caused an almost fatal reaction, where I ended up in the ER. Praise God from Whom all Blessings flow !!! |

Are you lazy? Many foods just don't have the nutrition they use to have. So it has nothing to do with no eating the right foods. It is just they aren't that nourishing anymore. Soil depletion for one. |

I have Lyme induced mitochondrial disease and some supplements have given me back my life: ubiquinol(coq10) B12 ALA 7-keto carnitine Ribose glutamine fish oil magnesium |

Mercurius User ID: 1087913 United States 10/21/2010 10:21 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I strongly suspect the drug industry pays for regular articles stating that supplements are of no use. Thats all the popular press ever says, they repeat every negative study and rarely if ever mention the positive studies. However real studies done by real researches show all sorts of benefits depending on the supplement and the disease in question. Next time the popular press says something is of no use, go and look it up on medline you'll get a very different perspective. Don't believe the anti supplement hype paid for by the drug industry. |

Unfortunately my hair is very thin especially in the bangs area, here you can see the scalp no matter ho I style my hair. Any suggestions on hat might really work, since I don't relish popping pills? Anyone? Thanks. |

Soil depletion for one. It is the world upside down. Thinking foods have nothing and a pill has something... Don't believe the hype, we all are still alive and not dying. Just eat 2 apples if you think 1 apple doesn't work. I would only eat supplements if you miss out on stuff because of not eating meat or because of an allergy... Time is a great teacher, unfortunately it kills all its pupils. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 919411 United States 10/22/2010 02:17 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Sometimes I think people are flushing their money down the toilet by spending all that money on supplements. Especially if someone is eating healthy to start with. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1133622Do you take a vitamin or supplement? Has it REALLY improved your health? I take a quality multi-vitamin with minerals tablet 1x a day along with 1000 mg of vitamin c and a fish oil capsule. The vitamins help with eyesight (A), healing (antioxidative) (C, E), enzyme (A, K), kidney (folic acid), and endocrine (D) functions. The minerals support muscles (Ca), bones (Ca, P), teeth (Ca), nervous system (Na, K), endocrine system (I) and other physiological functions. The vitamin C also specifically supports immune system function and has general healing/reparative properties. The fish oil is high in omega 3 fatty acids which helps lower bad cholesterol and so are good for the heart. I am usually sick 2 days every other year; you be the judge. However, I am stopping the fish oil capsules because the drug companies are shamelessly now using the fish kills (fish that died) from corexit poisoning to scoop up and derive the oil (and also corexit) from. I honestly read an article about the drug companies harvesting the corexit-killed fish to get their fish oil supply to make fish oil supplements. The article was published around the time we had all of the "dead fish" threads popping up every day (mid-late July?). So...because fish oil capsules now possibly contain corexit, I am discontinuing taking them. |

Maca root powder, kelp, spirulina barley grass and brewers yeast are super potent with all nutrients the body needs. I wouldnt waste my time buying individual supps. The supps I mentioned cover everything. |

Especially if someone is eating healthy to start with. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1133622Do you take a vitamin or supplement? Has it REALLY improved your health? Vitamin D3 3,000 IU/day. It's great, great, great. A good +50 multivitamin (one made in Canada, DON'T trust the generics), Vit C on hand, ecchinacea and goldenseal and zinc for colds. If you're over 40 your ability to make D goes down drastically. My hair, which has been nearly white for years, has started coming in dark again (not all over but way more now than for many years) and that started about a month after I started taking D3 6 months ago. More energy. Stopped gaining weight, appetite is greatly reduced and I only eat good food (have a garden) and organic meats. Vitamin D is great stuff, I have less muscle aches (I have arthritis, or so I've been told), am much more flexible - I get my omega's right from fish and nuts and flax seed and olive oil. I eat loads of veggies and fruit from our own garden, but yeah, I did notice an improvement with Vitamin D supplementation. I work in health care and from what I've picked up over the years, most adults 40+ are Vitamin D (especially D3) deficient. It's a preventative for all sorts of things. And I make sure I'm outside at least half an hour a day (well, except when it's pouring rain) and usually more than that if the sun's out, so all that good D gets "activated" - didn't used to believe in supplements, but they do play a role as you get older and it's a good one too and not expensive. Plus if you are D deficient it isn't as easy for your body to absorb calcium, another reason to take it to promote bone health. It's not expensive at all. My husband takes supplements for his joints (omegas, hyaluronic acid, chondroitin, etc), he could barely walk before he started the supplements. He still uses a cane but he is much more mobile than he was. He can't take pharaceuticals, he reacts very badly to most medications, so the supplements really saved him and reduced his pain by quite a bit. He can also walk a lot farther and work in the garden all day and two years ago he couldn't do that (bad knees, very bad back, shoulder injury). He managed to stave off knee replacement surgery with supplements....so, we are both advocates. I know I'd rather take good quality supplements than any pharmaceutical drug, that's for sure. |

These vitamins I took were according to tests. Quality of vitamins is the number one issue. I have read labels on some varities, and if someone took them they would be in worse shape than they started. About the hair growth. My hair is doubled in volume and I have hair around my receeding hairline now. I no longer have a receeding hairline. My thin hair was a symptom of my poor health. Even my doctor will agree that if you can eat your "vitamins" from food you would be better off. This is not always possible though, as in my case, it was to bring me to the point where I was no longer depleted and unbalanced in my nutrional needs. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 900755 United States 10/25/2010 11:33 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I have taken vitamins for over 12 years and they gave me my health back. I was seeing a medical Nutritional Doctor. I probably started out taking about 30 vitamin supplements a day, now I take them about 1-3 times a week - only about 12 supplements plus green drink, aloe vera, etc - try to eat mostly organic. I'm even sitting on a wealth of supplements, stored all over the house, stocked up I guess for just in case..I just wish it wasn't so hard to get back into taking them. Reading this thread is a great motivator. |

But, I take two of them when only one is recommended. I also eat a lot of apples but don't have access to a lot of fresh fruits or veggies. I try and get them when I can but I've almost always been a meat and potatoes guy. |

You might not want to take them every day if you are not a very active person, because they are designed for people who do a lot of physical exercise. They are also fairly expensive. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 700410 Canada 10/25/2010 12:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I dont take none besides a omelet. Vitamins would have me to barf. I tried each one and damn that's no manner to live. If you want a vitamin have a egg. A egg truly has all. However eggs are a slight sedative actually if eating many. So not before that drive or not without some meat. Don't ever add milks to eggs as a food combining poison I'm told or recipe for a stomach ache say the Chinese. Have eggs plain Jane style with that toast and bacon no milk nor cereal and no juices. coconut and pollen are great however could cost a small fortune if availability became low |

Especially if someone is eating healthy to start with. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1133622Do you take a vitamin or supplement? Has it REALLY improved your health? ......Been taking vitamin and mineral supplements for YEARS.......you have to take BOTH, by the way, not just vitamins; they work together... Anyhow, I eat pretty well, but everything; just in moderation......I am not a vegetarian, but probably could be, just too lazy!! I eat meat perhaps once or twice a week; rest of the time it's veggies, fruits, cheese, etc. .........Firm believer in the B Complex; I just could not live without it.......keeps you calm and helps metabolize fats in the diet....... also take the usual: A, C, D, E, and flax seed oil for the OMegas.....I REFUSE to eat/take anything from the ocean!!! just a cesspool nowadays......so no fish oils for me.the flaxseed oil capsules take care of that.....also take ginko biloba......even though it recently was blasted as being not worthy, I find it keeps my circulation up....& that helps the brain and the groin..if you know what I mean.. HOw anyone can say that all you need to do is eat a good diet, is beyond me.....do you realize the number of chemicals, etc. being pumped into our food on all these mega-farms? organic helps, but I still say, 'take your supplements'........oh I could go on and on but I'll stop here, except for one last thing: I get my supplements from Puritan's Pride, in Oakdale NY....they are the manufacturer so you know their products are always fresh....not sitting in a warehouse somewhere for God knows how long!!! Have been using their products for 25 years now, and they are the best!!! and they always have great sales..... Just sayin'............. |
