The United States is actually composed of 59 Nation States. Of course, most people only know the of the 50 we were all taught about in grade school.

Well, it's time for your next lesson. Here are the 9 you didn't know about:

Guam
Ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898.
Payments from the US Federal Treasury ($143 million in 1997) into which
Guamanians pay no income or excise taxes; under the provisions of a special
law of Congress, the Guam Treasury, rather than the US Treasury, receives
federal income taxes paid by military and civilian Federal employees
stationed in Guam (2001 est.)


Puerto Rico
Ceded to the US as a result of the Spanish-American War in 1898.

American Samoa
International rivalries were settled by a 1899 treaty when Germany and the US
divided the Samoan archipelago.
Important financial support from the US, more than $40 million in 1994

Virgin Islands
United States purchase from the Danish in 1917.
