*****SURVIVAL GAME - To see who are worthy companions during the Apocalypse*****
My daughter recently completed a class project that I though would be fun here on GLP. It's not a particularly difficult scenario...I may post others that are increasingly challenging. This is just to be light and fun for the weekend. Play or don't play. I cannot wait to see your responses!

You and your companions have just survived the crash of a small plane. Both the pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. It is mid-January , and you are in Northern Canada. The daily temperature is 25 below zero, and the night time temperature is 40 below zero. There is snow on the ground, and the countryside is wooded with with several creeks criss-crossing the area. The nearest town is 20 miles away. You are all dressed in city clothes appropriate for a business meeting. Your group of survivors managed to salvage the following items:

A ball of steel wool

A small ax

A loaded .45-caliber pistol

Can of Crisco shortening

Newspapers (one per person)

Cigarette lighter (without fluid)

Extra shirt and pants for each survivor

20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas

A sectional air map made of plastic

One quart of 100-proof whiskey

A compass

Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)

Your task is to list the above 12 items in order of importance for your survival. List the various uses for each.

20 miles could be done in a long day.

If there is snow there is water..

food

Compass

Map
Gun has powder you could light w/ a

lighter

steel wool

clothing

Tarp

axe

Can of shortening(stove fuel and food in one)

That would get us 20 miles..Not easy but possible.

Booze for after-wards(or fuel supplement)

Priority one - Warmth

attempt to make Fire

I need the Steel Wool & the Planes Batteryto get sparks and some Newspaper as tinder.

Then we burn what we can, using the plane & the tarp for shelter.

Gunshots to signal for help

No way am I trying to run 20 miles in my street cloths in -25 degree weather.

In your scenario, probably all that would really be needed would be some of the steel wool and newspaper for tinder after collecting as much dead wood off of the surrounding trees, and the lighter to strike a spark from the flint. No need for any fluid. Once one or two good fires were going to create heat and plenty of smoke, the rescue planes would find you before you ran out of the chocolate. Some shelters could be built if the fuselage of the plane was too damaged to sleep in.

Re: *****SURVIVAL GAME - To see who are worthy companions during the Apocalypse*****
The most important action is to make sure you are secure in a safe area and if so stay in the area because help is on the way and wandering from the wreckage is almost sure death. You don't stand a chance if you happen to get wet and depending on where you are the compass may not be reliable.

Put on the extra clothes for warmth. Then comes shelter, heat, a signal fire set up for use as appropriate.

The order of importance would be the extra clothes, the canvas, the axe,(for shelter) the lighter, ball of steel wool, for fire starter then the crisco for use as lamp heat and light in the shelter by fashioning a makeshift wick.

The booze would be a help with fire starting and for use on the signal fire. The newspaper would be good to help keep warm when sleeping. The compass and map wouldn't be all that useful since you need to stay at the crash site. Lastly the chocolate bars would be good to grab a bit of energy as needed. The .45 calibre pistol might come in handy for protection or not. Definitely would not use it as a signal. First an aircraft would not hear it and ground crews would not be coming for you up there unless they knew exactly where you were anyway.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers (Eph. 4:29)

id wad up the newspapers between the extra layer of clothes for an added air insulation layer.

then eat the chocolate, and grease up my TAINT and BALLS with the crisco so that i wouldn't chafe on the 20 mile hike back to town that could be done in under 10 hours...

i'd leave everything else for the people who can stay with the crash site.

Your task is to list the above 12 items in order of importance for your survival. List the various uses for each.
 Quoting: PalmOfDeborah

1. One quart of 100-proof whiskey - you just survived a plane crash. You're gonna need a shot of whiskey!

2. A loaded .45-caliber pistol - puts ME in control of the situation. I can then make sure an idiot is not endangering my life.

3. A Compass - hold onto until you grab number 3.

4. A sectional air map made of plastic - now you can plot your course and get a general idea of where in the hell you are. If you don't read the map you actually have no idea where you are, and thus have no idea if you should stay or go. A town could be 5 miles away, for all you know.

5. 20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas - proceed to build shelter.

6. A small ax - now go get some firewood. Though the ax would not be necessary; it would just be handy.

7. Cigarette Lighter (without fluid) - remove the metal sheeting from the lighter.

8. A ball of steel wool - tear off small piece, fluff remaining piece, and use with lighter to start fire.

9. Can of Crisco Shortening - empty the contents onto a rock or something for use later. Remove the lid, shine with the steel wool, and make a signal mirror.

10. Extra shirt and pants for each survivor - now that everyone is done moving, tell everyone to put on the extra clothing to stay warm.

11. Newspapers (one per person) - hand everyone a newspaper. Tell them they can use it for some extra insulation in their clothes, save it for lighting another fire, or do what you're gonna do... Use it for toilet paper to clean your drawers AFTER that nasty plane crash!

12. Family-size Chocolate bars (one per person) - it is now time for a small snack.

The whiskey is last on the list. chuckle

The Crisco is next to last, unless there are two or more gay guys in the group, then it would be first on the list. laugh

Ps: The lighter is suppose to be listed as a Zippo style lighter, so you can use the whiskey to fuel it. thumbs

Re: *****SURVIVAL GAME - To see who are worthy companions during the Apocalypse*****
20 x 20 ft. piece of heavy-duty canvas
A small ax

Most important to make an improvised shelter, using the ax get a few good heavy branches and the canvas to make a shelter between two strong trees, drifting snow up against the sides to insulate it. The ax should also help clear some vegetation, preferably deadwood and small undergrowth useful for kindling.

---------------

Cigarette lighter (without fluid)
One quart of 100-proof whiskey
Newspapers (one per person)
Can of Crisco shortening
Extra shirt and pants for each survivor

These are all useful for creating a large fire. Crumple the newspaper and smear crisco on it as well. If the wood you chopped is wet you may have to use ripped up extra shirts covered in crisco to keep the fire going as the wood dries. Start the fire with the 100 proof whiskey and sparks from the fluidless lighter. A lean-to fire should be near the opening of the shelter for warmth. Once this fire and shelter are created the next step is clearing or finding a larger amount of wood to keep the fire going through the night, and for making a larger fire as a distress signal. Whatever clothing not used for the fire should be worn for maximum warmth.

---------------

A sectional air map made of plastic
A compass

If these options fail the next step, the next morning is determining the direction of the town using the map and compass. If the snow is getting feet wet while walking, melting the sections of the air map to your shoes to make rigged snowshoes could help, with both survivors huddled under the canvas to conserve heat while walking.

---------------

A loaded .45-caliber pistol
Family-size chocolate bars (one per person)
A ball of steel wool

The pistol isn't really important unless wildlife is investigating your shelter, but since the fire is going most animals should leave it alone.

The chocolate bars should be eaten if you are about to embark on the walk to the town, for the extra calories to stay warm and active.

The steel wool I can't be too sure about. If you could salvage a 9v battery from something they make excellent firestarters but alone I can't figure out how this would be useful.
