Re: Questions you had better know the answer to when TSHTF.
Just got back from a hike exploring possibilities and the terrain.

Feeling the need to free things up in my life a bit and get rid of or store my extra belongings. Getting prepared for being entirely mobile.

Did you know hono-hono grass is very edible?

Was not aware of that! Thanks. I'm in the process of learning all the edible plants in my surrounding area. I know where to get ferns, mangos, noni, guava and bananas right now.

I make land salads of hono-hono, hibiscus (all hibiscus flowers, except for one hybrid one, are edible...including Hau!), gotu kola, geranium, purslane, macnuts and that's just off the ground all over the place...

That's right - you're in Hawaii as well - Big Island?

I forgot about the hibiscus, they're everywhere. Haven't found any macnuts nearby. I'm on the edge of 190 acres of raw, wild land. On one of my hikes, I found the remains of ancient terraces so there has got to be wild taro and other edibles nearby.

Yep, Kohala.

On your hikes, you'll notice banana (usually plantain for some reason) up in the gulches, those are places usually planted/able for food.

I found that tea plants in the gulch usually designate a spring...

There are 1000's of acres of macnuts up here. Lot's of pigs, lots of forest...though in the height's the gathering can be quite scarce.

Hopefully or waters remain clean and accessible.

Tons of pigs where I live but they're not kosher so I'll just have to settle for chicken. Got more of them than pigs! Easier to clean and cook as well plus, they also lay eggs.

Pigs are quite plentiful here on the big island, as well as cattle and fish. Won't be hungry for meat for a while.

Re: Questions you had better know the answer to when TSHTF.
good topic.

I live in a large urban area at 45 degs. North. Growing season is mid-may to late september. Been gradually expanding my gardens. This fall I am planting jerusalem artichokes back in the woods. Next spring I am planting herbs in the woods. I have lived in this area my whole life and I know it like the back of my hand.

I also practice what I call "stealth-hiking" where I move about the area in such a way as to avoid observation by other people. It sounds kind of freaky, but when we were kids we used to do this as a game, and it was really fun.

I am above average knowledgeable about edible flora.
I have practiced with nettles, plantain, dandelions, and ramps(wild onions). I also have positive id on a half dozen edible wild mushrooms.

There are squirrels, rabbits, wild turkey, deer, opossum, and raccoons in the area. Also frogs and snakes. A fish-able lake about one mile away and a fish-able river less than 1/2 mile. I have two propane grills and a propane stove. I buy propane canisters every time I shop. I also have a good set of cast iron cookware for cooking over wood fire.

My immediate neighbors are cool. Both are gardeners. One has chickens. They are also former military and have weapons. Most of my other neighbors are pretty decent folk, and we all know who to watch out for in the immediate vicinity.

Last year I put in a wood-burning stove and for now, I have enough wood on my own land and nearby for several winters.

There is a running stream adjacent to my property and I own two Big Berkeys. I also have rain barrels set up on my gutters.

I am reading up on sandbag structures and trying to set aside a few bucks to buy enough bags to build a shelter. My soil is almost pure sand, and I have a little Bobcat front-end loader to dig with. I think it will be a fun project.

However, I think that order will prevail. Short of a "The Road" scenario, I just don't see an utter collapse in the cards. There are just too many solid, sensible people who will come together to maintain a tolerable level of social functionality.

Still, I am changing my life-style and ordering my priorities toward preparedness and greater self-sufficiency. It just feels right.

1) Are you in a "safe place" given the distribution and nature of the people around you? Do you have a good relationship with your immediate neighbors? Can you be the leader if needed?

2) Do you have a source of clean water when the tap stops working? Water filter? Do you know several ways to purify water with common materials?

3) Do you have a reasonable store of emergency food? Could you hunt/gather your calorie needs from the land around you? Can you provide for more than yourself? How many more?

4) Will you need to relocate to satisfy any of these three? Do you know where you would need to go? Are you prepared to have to walk there?

Re: Questions you had better know the answer to when TSHTF.
I spent years living in the bush is the past 40 + yrs.
In this area of the world it is no picnic.
Harsh weather.
Very little to eat.
And I am a good forager.
For over a decade my wife and I gathered a large deep freeze full of berries, mostly saskatoons from various wild patches which we knew and looked after.
Plus all the other edible berries and natural goodies.
Lots of work and only small results to show.
Some years were bad due to weather and other things.
We did well, but it took all our available time, and then some.
The fact is, if there is some serious SHTF then there will be a lot of competition for already meager resources.

People get this "romantic" and unrealistic fantasy going in their heads about survivalism.
They need to just go and do it for a few years and wise up a bit.

Our New strategy is to live at ground zero (for our area) so that we can just check out when it does hit (if it does)
I have no interest in playing mad max survivalist games.
(And no...I am not suicidal...in spite of all the BS, I enjoy living and have a strong survival instinct.)

I will be staying where I am shtf.I live well into the country, plenty of game and resources for post shtf.

Here is an item every person planning on cooking post shtf needs. [link to www.manventureoutpost.com]
It will burn nearly anything.I have even read some expedition reports from south America where they where burning used vegetable oil in one.Diesel, gas,Coleman, kerosene, nearly any oil(even motor oil thinned with alcohol). No smoke....so for me that is the ultimate shtf stove.

Great post, this is something I am currently struggling with. I recently moved from an arctic/alpine environment where I was extremely proficient in outdoor survival to a desert one which I know absolutely nothing about. While I still have my B.O.B. and 3 months worth of food stored, I am starting over at square one in terms of wild edibles and outdoor survival techniques.

Because i'm too lazy to actually walk from Location A to Location B to get a feel for it, i was able to 'walk' most of the way using Google street view.

This seemed like a good idea, in case it we make a bee-line from A to B. Recognizing roads, creeks, and mountain tops might be the only way to navigate when SHTF.

Ultimately if you do have to relocate it'll be in one direction. Know which direction that is and how to i identify it if a compass is not a available.....make a compass available!
