Quoting: Anonymous Coward 775612Is Mike Oehler still around? I have his first book: "The $50.00 and Up Underground House." Excellant read! Yes he is very old now, and living on the same land but in a normal style house next to the road. He says that the old house has blended into the hill so well now its difficult for even him to find it. otherwise last time he checked it was still in stable shape. Still up there at Bonners Ferry then. Good I wish him well. "I'm still here, you bastards!"...Papillion |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 728979 United States 08/14/2010 12:03 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Earthships are entirely doable. I've worked on several of them and seen more. Problems: Local zoning (of course) Many banks are hesitant to provide any sort of mortgage for "non-traditional" construction--this can be a major hurtle if you're gonna need a mortgage. Insurance: if you hook-up a mortgage, good luck finding an insurance company willing to take on a "non-traditional" construction. Labor---very labor intensive. Don't expect to stay within that nice little budget you've happily figured out. Also, you'll learn the full meaning of "40-minute hippie" as workers appear/disappear magically. Really easy for the project to lose focus and turn into a months-long party. Another problem: don't go crazy with the concept of "solar gain"...almost every earthship I've seen hasn't nearly enough opening windows for ventilation. Without this, in summer you're living in a solar oven--end of story. Don't let happy-talk about the angle of the roof protecting you in the summer, blah blah---sounds nice, doesn't work. If you're working with straw bales, all of the above applies, plus you've got to get-on-it and get the job done. Keep the bales covered from those afternoon showers, proceed dutifully with the work. Otherwise, you'll have mushrooms and mold growing in the straw and endless problems later. Also, mice are the enemy. It's possible to get infestations within the straw that are beyond imagining--think "project ruined". |

He says that the old house has blended into the hill so well now its difficult for even him to find it. otherwise last time he checked it was still in stable shape. He and I coressponded a few times back in the '70's. He was a pioneer in the "livable" underground houses. I built a small one out of mainly salvaged materials on a hill on some property I had years ago. Sold the land in about "82. The owners used it for awhile until the county started in with permits, codes, ect. The last I heard it was bulldozed and a conventional house sits there now. (sigh) Didn't he do a video where he showed off his little $400 house in Colorado? I seem to remember seeing that somewhere, coolest thing was his greenhouse which was dug into the side of a hill and had the plants at ground level and a sunken space to collect the cold were he could stand and work on the plants. Pretty nifty! |

User ID: 1069022 United States 08/15/2010 01:56 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I love the idea of creating personally creating a home ( it is said to be therapeutic in many cultures just working with the earth itself) and doing so just about anywhere. There is a lot to like about cob houses- from adding designs and built in shelves at nearly a whim to the "low-impact", little to no electricity and off grid possibilities. Some of the things I like would be the re-use of windows and doors that I can find treasure hunting ;)keeping price down and land fills happy and being able to add room as needed or time allowed. Another really great thing would be being able to build or mold living areas around already existing natural beauty ie: boulders inside used as furniture, old tree stump, etc. Quoting: CuriouslyIncognitoenjoy :) Free, totally true and extremely therapeutic to be working with dirt ;o) that's why Ive been hunting for some acreage for years. Glad you found it too. . Last Edited by femme flambe on 08/15/2010 01:57 PM I live for a better tomorrow; where chickins will cross roads without having their motives questioned. |
