Cobb Houses- tiny cabins and living off the grid
A friend of mine has been working some land and excavating to get the materials needed for building whatever she desires :) I started looking into the idea of cob structures and was really surprised to find something I am just falling in love with.

I love the idea of creating personally creating a home ( it is said to be therapeutic in many cultures just working with the earth itself) and doing so just about anywhere. There is a lot to like about cob houses- from adding designs and built in shelves at nearly a whim to the "low-impact", little to no electricity and off grid possibilities. Some of the things I like would be the re-use of windows and doors that I can find treasure hunting ;)keeping price down and land fills happy and being able to add room as needed or time allowed. Another really great thing would be being able to build or mold living areas around already existing natural beauty ie: boulders inside used as furniture, old tree stump, etc.
enjoy :)

"My jaw dropped when I first watched this video tour of a beautiful owner-built green building construction project in Oregon. This particular green building is made entirely out of cob, a mixture of clay, sand, and straw.

Meka Bunch of Wolf Creek, Oregon built this stunning cob house over a four year period. Complete with hand-sculpted furniture, shelves and nooks built directly into the walls, arched windows, and a killer custom staircase, his cob building is a divine artistic achievement."

but it doesn't have to start this fancy :)

I dig the cobb idea. I will probably use cobb in my Oehler type underground house.

Cobb is also used when building Rocket Mass Stoves.

Good stuff. Where abouts is your friend at? I'm aiming for Montana...

It's all cool and all until the code enforcers show up....If you even thought about doing something like that here in SWFL, I think you would probably be shot. I probably should have pulled a permit just to watch the video. Personally, I think it is awesome. You could solve alot of homeless problems cheap, with houses such as that.

Friggin awesome!!!

There is a door shop next to where I work...I work in a wealthy area and these guys are constantly throwing away perfectly good, sold wood doors...some of them are beautiful doors...

Every time I walk by those doors they are throwing out I am thinking of what I could do with them...we did make a garden box out of one which I have an organic veggie garden in.

I love this stuff!

I saw a really neat huge family dining table made from a door a long time ago. They used legs from another table and topped it with glass :)

I seem to remember looking them up awhile back :) They also make GREAT canvases !! I love doors painted to look like entering another world or whimsical doors inside rooms leading out :) ( they sell for good money too )

NO Shit!

I watched the permit demons run one of the most brilliant architects of our time out of Taos, Michael Reynolds, because he dared the system and built Earthships out on the Mesa. Problem is, they were self sufficient, made of recycled materials and provided honest labor for the kids in town. They hated him, and he didn't care much for them either.

If you have ever seen an earthship, you understand why. It is nothing at all like any house I have ever been in before or since.

Looks like he's taking his show on the road, he went to Indonesia after the tsunami and taught them how to make them, then off to Louisiana after Katrina to give them a hand, now it looks like he is on the Galapagos Islands:

About eight years ago my middle son wanted to build a club house with me and his brothers...so we talked about how big and what it would have in it...ya know kids...we ended up with a little "house" instead of a kids clubhouse...I had a friend of mine that teaches building trades at a local vocational school teach us how to properly build this thing...

It has heating and AC, tv/dvd, frig, cable and internet...couch bed...everything a typical house has but it's 20'X 20' that's 400 square feet that is so well insulated you could heat it with a candle if you wanted to...When the kids are grown and moved I may rent it out as a tiny apartment...

and of course it's powered by my solar power from the house...

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

when you rob Paul to give to Peter ... ... ... you will always get Peters support!

I helped a friend build a cob house, it was amazing! You really do seem to feel better after, more centered and calm. Plus the house feels like a home from the beginning.

I'm actually planning on building myself an earthbag home, it's supposed to be a bit warmer given my climate :)

[link to www.earthbagbuilding.com]

*edit*
Rammed earth is also supposed to make nice houses, and cordwood is great for cold climates. So many nice options...

earthbags take time it can be done with one person but, big BUTT you still need to coat them for protection. using a slightly cement or lime mix than earth bags fill you can make either of these systems and have a 'finished' wall!

[link to zelltree.net]

I'm going to try the second links method since all the forms can be reused in the roof

Yea, the single-person build ability is part of what attracted me to the building style. I'll be able to finish a modest house in a summer, then add as time goes on.

I'm actually covering mine in cob, gives a higher R value (it get's cold here!!)
Some people use papercrete to cover the bags, but there seems to be a difference in opinion as to how well papercrete holds up in damp climates.

Having built with earthbags the coating step is easily the most time consuming, start socking our limewash two months before you need it or the lime will not stick to wall!!. The bags are slippery and wobbly after knee high. I waited too long and have to replace my top most earthbags due to 'sunburn'

He and I coressponded a few times back in the '70's. He was a pioneer in the "livable" underground houses. I built a small one out of mainly salvaged materials on a hill on some property I had years ago. Sold the land in about "82. The owners used it for awhile until the county started in with permits, codes, ect. The last I heard it was bulldozed and a conventional house sits there now. (sigh)
