I think the first page shows in what % of fat, protein and carbs.

What quantity of protein recommended for this type of diet?

I am believer in paleo / low carb natural real food but hear different opinions on amount of protein. Some say eat all the protein you desire (be naturally self-regulating) others say limit protein (use a formula based on your weight) because protein in excess of your daily cellular repair needs cause some metabolic problems.

determine your target body weight - height in centimeters minus 100(+- 6%)then take your target body weight in kilograms. You eat approximately 1 gram of protein per kilogram of target weight per day. 2.5-3.5 grams fat, .25 to .50 grams carbs.

cheese and dairy are not good for you and are not part of a real paleo diet, and you should be getting all of your butter and meats from grass fed or pasture raised animals, so alot of the info on this thread is completely booshit

Even if you don't stick to the ratios, you'll still lose as long as the protein/carbs are low. I can't eat that much fat, but I still lose with around a 2:1 fat/protein ratio. I also carb load on 1 day a week to restore my muscle glycogen levels for my workouts. I'll eat nothing but starchy foods like potatoes for that one day. Even with this I'm always in at least a moderate state of ketosis (according to the ketostix I use to measure ketones). I find carb loading 1 day a week works better if you're trying to build muscle. I'm seeing better gains than when I first started this in 2011. The only tradeoff is your body fat will burn off a little slower than pure low carb.

Here is a great video/interview of Dr Mary Vernon, MD, is one of the world's foremost experts on treating obesity and diabetes with low carbohydrate nutrition. She is a practicing family physician, educates doctors on low carb and is active in and former president of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians (doctors specializing in treating obese patients).

Nobody knows more about the practicalities of low carb than dr. Mary Vernon. Here she explains it for you.

It is 32 minutes long , but well worth the watch, for anyone who wishes to hear about the very low carb success from a medical point of view--and when asked she responded that the low carb lifestyle was good for EVERYONE.

Hi OP! Is there any book you can recommend that explains all this in detail? I can't sit at the computer and read through 100 pages of this thread.....and the info is all scattered through the thread.

I'm going to try this diet, but I need to educate myself about it first.

Thank you!

Thanks, I got the Atkins book, bought a scale and Ketosis test strips. Going grocery shopping today and plan to start Atkins tomorrow. I'm going to loose around 70lbs.

Maybe I really can do it this way and feel healthy again! I'm excited!

Hey gang!

I am sure many of you noticed the "bullet-proof" coffee thread a few weeks back.

I went out and bought some quality shade grown coffee, and some kerrygold grass fed butter. I had coconut oil on hand.

This stuff is awesome.

2 cups fresh brewed/filtered.
2 or more tablespoons grass fed butter.
2 or more tablespoons coconut oil.

Put in blender. Run on high till everything is emulsified.

Yields slightly more than two cups of very tasty and highly energized hot beverage. With just the two tablespoons each of butter and oil - this drink provides nearly 500 calories, almost all fat. Delicious. This would be a very effective way of doing a 'fat-fast' since it gives you the fat, and is easy to consume.

I get the same effect as eating bacon and eggs. Smooth, steady energy for 7-8 hours before feeling hungry. Have had several 2-3 day stretches where I was never hungry, but also never lacked in energy.

I had gained about 8 lbs. over the winter and so was near the top of my range. Lost 8 lbs. in two weeks using this bev.

just search for 'bullet-proof coffee'.

It comes off fast in the beginning. My first month alone I dropped 18 lbs. Just stick with it as your normal way of eating and it'll all come off with time.

I know, I'm craving carbs too....really bad ....I'm on day 5. I got Ketosis test strips, so atleast I know I'm now in fat burning mode instead of sugar burning mode. It does help a little mentally to know that.

Did you get any ketosis test strips?

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
I am not sure why you are having such intense carb cravings. I was mega-carber right up to the day I started this diet. Never had cravings. I was only hungry when I was hungry, if that makes sense. I could walk by a bakery in the morning and the smells had no power.

Typical for me is 7-8 hours between meals, eating this way.

I think one of the best tricks for defeating cravings is to drink a 8-12 ounces of water. It has been mentioned numerous times in this thread to keep your water intake up. When you are detoxing, you need lots of it to help flush everything out.

Also, if you have cut way back on fruits, fruit juices, and vegetables, you need to replace the water that you formerly obtained from those foods.

Drinking water is very important when detoxing, but I'm not even back into that yet.
A trick for me would be meditation instead of carb loading.

@ Lisa: no, never bought ketosis strips in the years I'm eating this way (on and off a bit). I can smell and see it from my pee, and recognize other signs in my body.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
If you're having carb cravings, find high fat snacks and water to suppress them. I tend to cycle what kind of snacks and foods I eat every so often since the same thing for too long can get boring, even disgusting. Right now I'm really big on that high fat cream cheese gelatin recipe that was posted a few pages back and salted macadamia nuts. The nuts are pricey so the next best choice to macs are peanuts, they just have more carbs/protein so you can't eat as many They also contain some polyunsaturated fat. The gelatin is so filling and has such a high saturated fat content. Knox gelatin is unflavored so I use some vanilla extract to give it a vanilla flavor/scent, combined with stevia for some sweetness. I've seen some mention cheese pancakes too. I've tried those, but I find they come out so thin that they're just never filling enough for me. Anyway there's always options to get past carb cravings and a lot of cravings are psychological/emotional anyway. Not only does this diet correct your physical way of eating, but it builds and strengthens your mental willpower too. I've always had a weakness for chocolate and potato chips with onion dip, but recently I've been tested by both of those and found that I can even turn them down, whereas being offered such items for free in the past would've been the end of me.

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
hey R from the Netherlands,

I know you have been coming to this thread for a long time. I almost feel like I know you.

Don't look at it as a will-power thing. I look at it more like an experiment, with myself as the subject, and the diet on trial. In order for the experiment to be valid, the subject must follow the ratios. If one does not follow the ratios, one does not have valid data upon which do evaluate the diet.

Anyhow, greetings and all good things to you from my neck of the world. And here's to you getting stuff sorted out.

peace

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
thanks htp; yep, we both have be coming here since the start eh :) nice to see your approach. I want to keep this a 100% style of eating with an occasional carb sneak in between on parties or holiday, and normally in the past few years I've been able to get back in the rhythm quite easily (because it makes me feel goooood) but right now...meh; maybe lack of spring weather doesn't help, there's some psychological issues on the foreground that don't make it easier...but I'll get there again

thanks for the advice, Generation Doom. That point of the day, late afternoon when coming home, is always a bitch. It's the main focus point of the day to get over by indeed (for example) a fat snack (but indeed are those delicious macadamia's really expensive, other high fat snacks are not really easy to find...gotta get myself a good lowcarb cookbook but without them residing to fruits and grains, dumbasses) and/or meditation and sports...

Nice to think along together, guys :)

Re: If you want to be thin and stay thin (and avoid Metabolic Syndrome), then you have to eat high fat
It's interesting to see this thread again and to read what was posted a couple of years ago -v- what is being posted now. I posted a couple of times early on. I've really been on a kind of personal journey the past few months with my weight.

I've discovered a new way to eat but it's not necessarily low carb. I've been very successful, too. My experience was that early last June, I didn't eat wheat for three days. I think it was because it was early summer and I was more interested in smoothies, salads, and the likes - it wasn't a conscious decision. I discovered I felt so much better but didn't know why. I reviewed my diet and realized it was the lack of wheat. In doing research, I learned that gluten sensitivities are hereditary and I know from doctors' tests that my son is sensitive. Hmmm, I thought, that probably means I am, too. So, I dropped all wheat and gluten products from my diet.

I have eaten lots of raw fruits, raw and steamed veggies, dairy products, and meats. No processed foods at all. I've been walking 1 mile per day. I lost a ton of weight (just slightly over 40 lbs)and improved my health tremendously. I didn't realize that eating wheat was behind my cravings for sugar. I always thought eating the sugar itself caused my cravings and couldn't figure out why, even when I stayed away from white sugars and HFCS I still drooled over baked goods. I don't crave them at all now.

However, I have also discovered that if I slip and eat wheat, the inflammatory response makes me gain 3-4 pounds overnight and then I crave junk again. This isn't just because of the insulin spike issue, but because of the specific compounds wheat contains.

If you do research on wheat intolerance, you will find that wheat causes all kinds of problems in our modern diets (diets which are filled with processed wheat products) - and the consumption of our modern wheat pretty much mirrors the increase in obesity. Heart disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia, joint pain (especially feet, ankle, wrist, hand), near-sightedness and night blindness, etc., wheat can play a role in so many of our modern ills.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7570540

Since I started this diet 1 week ago, I have not had to take antacids even once. I used to live on them, about 3 times a day constant acid stomach and heart burn. No more random diarrhea either.........used to get that a few times a week for no reason.

I'm convinced it was the wheat and maybe the sugar too!
