"A leading scientific journal has warned of bacteria growing in bilge water that can eat through the steel hull of a ship in a matter of months. Aerobic bacteria use up all the oxygen in the bilge water. This results in an ideal environment for anaerobic sulphate-reducing bacteria (SRBs) such as “desulfovibrio desulfuricans”.
