Can we really blame rainfall and leaking pipes for all these sinkholes now? Seems like there are just too many. Why don't I remember hearing about this many in the past? There has been rain and broken pipes before - why didn't they cause this many sinkholes??

Here's another source. Complete story.

In live in the region and the ground here isn't even limestone/karst topography. It's pretty solid ground (compacted clay). Sinkhole seem to be a new trend now, especially in urban areas. I've never heard or seen any sinkholes in this area at all before.

There was a fire at this location a couple months back and they recently filled in the foundation and everything, so maybe it isn't packed in or settled yet, and we got 8 inches of rain in less than 2 hours today.

Well that could help explain that hole. Urban storm runoff moves fast and I'm sure it helped erode this hole. Nevertheless, ya gotta watch for water on the roadways ~ it could be deeper than you think!

this is what happens when you cover the earth with concrete and asphalt. the earth underneath breaks down from lack of the most important inflow of life we know...the sun. all it takes is some flooding, or some settling to open up one of these nutrient lacking dead spots.
