Backyard Poultry, the new trend? | |
Canuck NLI User ID: 1026256 Canada 07/05/2010 05:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was in the Veterinary supply place last week to pick up some Frontline for my 4 leggers. Quoting: WoodspriteThey also sell animal feed there too. I had the strangest experience...got the Frontline, paid for it...but it was like the owner wanted to talk, so I chit-chatted for a bit. Then he looks at my friends that are with me ( LOL.. my big scary tattooed, pierced, on again/off again boyfriend), and he just blurts out " Do you raise chickens?'! It was so off the wall! Ricky does not look like a chicken farmer standing there in his Ramones T-shirt, and boots.. :P I guess the guy could see my shock...because then he started talking about how much feed he is selling for chickens ( this is in Louisville, proper, big city). Says that there are tons of people that are getting 6 chickens and keeping them in their backyards. Apparently 6 is the limit you can keep inside the city limits. I felt it was worth sharing, just for weirdness alone...LOL But I also thought, "that guy sure did make an effort to be sure and tell me how many people are starting to keep chickens in the city" might be something I'm supposed to pass along. So, here it is.......there has been a big uptick in the number of City Dwellers that are housing 6 chickens in their backyard. Having chickens is a great idea, more people should have them. Now the Frontline, is not such a great idea. Any of those types of flea products are basically insecticides, and the end result of putting this on any animal will be to shorten their life span and create illness. I recently adopted an older Pekingese boy, who was observed to have poor muscle control when he was found as a stray. When I got him home he seized a couple of times in the first couple of weeks. It was only when I saw how sensitive he was to fleas that I realized that his former owners must have used flea control "poison" on him to control fleas. I do not use this on my guys and never will. When fleas are a problem, I bath them with a squirt of iodine and it kills the fleas dead. I now have the job of trying to get this poison out of his poor little body. People really should research things before they put them in their bodies or the bodies of those they love. Just sayin ....... |
Night Owl User ID: 904954 United States 07/05/2010 05:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yep, it becoming a lot more common. In fact, many cities are having to re-write their zoning laws to make rules for them. ie no roosters, allow to have only 2-4 hens, etc. You can buy portable chicken coops with outdoor run attached so you can move it around your backyard. Saves on mowing the grass I suppose. So chickens mow your lawn, eat the bugs, fertilize the lawn AND you get eggs. Note to city folk - hens will lay eggs without a rooster :-) so don't need one. Hens will lay for about 2-3 years then they don't produce much. Most folks then butcher the hen to eat. Note to self; don't get too attached to said chicken if you're going to eat it...... |

I normally don't use anything on the 4 leggers......but this year it is horrible! I'm in the middle of the woods, by a creek, so the animals are covered with fleas and ticks. Maybe if I were in the city, Iodine would work...but out here, even the Frontline isn't working.. :( They would have to swim in the stuff all day long, I believe, to handle this year. |

And it does kill the fleas, however, one has to keep doing this often, particularly if your pet is really bothered by them. :) |

Quoting: Night Owl 904954I was kinda happy to hear that people are starting to think about taking care of themselves......planting gardens, raising chickens....seems like a good sign to me. I'd have some here....but I doubt I would have them more than a day or 2, just so many things that would LOVE a chicken dinner! Foxes, Owls, Coyotes, Raccoons, Hawks... I'd have to guard them like Fort Knox! :P Growing up, I raised Pulletts for 4-H...had 250 of them at 1 time! I loved it...every day was an Easter Egg hunt, because I didn't pen them up..just let them be free .... :) |

Everyone should allow birds "out by day and up by night" as that's the predator give and take respect for the fact they own the night rule. They are a bit noisy at full maturity but that's males not chicks or females. THAT'S RIGHT!! WE HAVE 14... no bugs at all...great compost, the lighest and fluffiest eggs you could imagine... and they have a totally secure coop and large 8 x 10 ft covered run... no worry of any predators during the day and are locked up securely at night. During the late Spring, Summer, and early Fall they are allowed to free range our backyard as long as we are out there with them, which will keep the airborne predators away... Just got two Pekin Ducklings...so will be getting duck eggs and hopefully babies next year... Way out in the country though...had to move from town when the chicks got to be about five months old...too much noise for the Burbs... They are so wonderful and funny and so worth the trouble! |
