Never been around one but have always read they are good dogs, gentle. But I would introduce it carefully with the cat.

Poor people do poor people things, and rich people do rich people things.

You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is the beginning of the end of any nation.

You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

Goodbye, halcyon days...

There is a theory which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable.

There is another theory mentioned, which states that this has already happened.

My brother has had Bassets for years.
They are Great with kids, really smart and have a lot of personality.

They do not like to be left alone, but will go to sleep anywhere you stop for 15 minutes.

Good choice for a family pet.

LOL if she is anything like yours i'm sure she is going to do just fine at my house. i've been told she was very well trained, a little spoiled but very much loved. its circumstances that are forcing this lady to make a difficult decision.

i can't wait to get her now... thanks so much everyone!!!!

Like all hounds they are prone to overeating and scavenging for anything resembling food -- but but sweet disposition.

Re: does anyone own a basset hound?
I had one that shared a home with a Rottweiler. They got along wonderfully. The basset was sweet and gentle and I loved her dearly. As others have said, they do need a lot of attention to their ears, but it is easy to do.

Re: does anyone own a basset hound?
We have a six year old Basset.

The poster that called them easily trainable is insane.

Our dog has been wonderful with the kids.

They are mostly gentle, smart, and the most stubborn dog you will ever own. They take life at their own pace... try to rush them and they will deliberately go slower.

just be careful how much you feed her (just two small cups a day) they're prone to getting overweight which really messes with their joints.

You have made a wise coice and this basset will reward you with years of protection, joy, and unconditional love.

PS Bassets are natural hunting dogs if you've got someone in family that likes to get out in the woods and bag critters.

Re: does anyone own a basset hound?
Our family has owned four Bassets over the years. Our current boy, Gunnar, is 13 years old, actively fighting cancer thanks to the wonderful vet clinic at Ohio State University. He's still going strong and most days acts like he's two or three.

I agree with the other posters about being friendly, family oriented dogs. Gunnar is very protective of his family members but is all bark, no bite. One of his favorite things is to visit the daycare that my daughter attends. He eats up all the attention from the kids.

He's been raised with other dogs and a house full of cats. He plays chase with the cats on a regular basis. Sometimes he chases the cats, other times, the cats chase him. Again, he's always been very gentle with the cats and has never once hurt them.

He really thinks he's the patriarch of the family. If one of the other dogs is getting into trouble, like getting into the garbage can or chewing something they shouldn't, he barks until we check it out and correct the other dog's behavior!

VERY important to keep the ears clean to prevent yeast and bacterial infections. During the summer, we clean his ears two to three times a weeks, a little less during the winter.

He went to obedience school when he was a puppy so he knows the basic commands. You need to know that Bassets have a mind of their own and are very smart. I very much believe they were put on this earth to please themselves, not their humans. They have to think it is their idea to do something. They can be very stubborn at times. If you keep this in mind, she should make a wonderful addition to your family.

One other plus is their long, velvety ears. They love to have their ears rubbed and it's like therapy to do so!

Good luck with her and keep us updated on how she's doing!

so that's where my mt. fiest gets her sulkiness from. she will pout at the least little admonishment. mt. fiest is a breed of whippet, greyhound, basset hound and rat terrier. she's a beautiful looking dog, sleek and long legged.
