Too bad about the Red Cross. Salvation Army is another one to watch out for, if you think that anyone should be helped, not just people who fit with their spiritual agenda.

I, too, have not donated to the Red Cross for a long time. I donate my time at homeless shelters, soup kitchens, visit nursing homes...not so much anymore since I was assaulted and since I have had kids; but I still make an effort to practice "random acts of kindness" when I can, in whatever way I can.

I advocate anyone looking to give to charity, start looking down the street. If you know anyone laid off and in need of help that is the best place to start.

Notice that this is a time for people to realize that we have a responsibility for us. It is hard to want to help only to find out you have been taken advantage of.

I had renters that fell on hard times and the gentleman had one of his toes removed, for 1 year I gave then free rent. 800 a month, only to find out at the end of the game they were getting a divorce. They had 5 children, each wanted me to order the other out of the house. I told them that if that was their choice I was ordering both out of the house. The mother couldn't believe her ears, she actually said "are you going to put the children out in the street?" With that I told her, no she was going to put the children out in the street, I had given them an abundance to get back on their feet and they are throwing it away if they so choose.

She chose and I have a new renter, I do believe in helping others but they have to want to help themselves. That is what the entire trial is about and without the lesson that comes with it we are being just as corrupt as someone else stealing the money.

I give and am willing to give but realize that to give blindly is dangerous to the individual.
