SKorea: Super tanker hijacked by Somali pirates, SKorean warship catches up

SEOUL, South Korea -- South Korea's Foreign Ministry says a South Korean-owned oil tanker with 24 sailors aboard is believed to have been hijacked by Somali pirates.

The ministry says the hijacking is thought to have occurred Sunday about 930 miles (1,500 kilometers) southeast of the Gulf of Aden.

A ministry official says a South Korean navy ship operating in the Gulf of Aden received a call from the tanker saying three Somali pirates had boarded the vessel. The official says there was no subsequent contact.

The ministry says five crew members are South Korean and 19 are Filipino. It says the 300,000-ton-class tanker was sailing from Iraq to the U.S. state of Louisiana.

Somalia, which has had no functioning government since 1991, is the world's top piracy hot spot.

Peace

S.Korean warship catches up with hijacked supertanker

A South Korean warship has caught up with a supertanker hijacked by Somali pirates but is keeping its distance from the vessel for the sake of the crew's safety, officials said Tuesday.
The destroyer has tracked down the 300,000-tonne South Korean tanker Samho Dream, which is heading for Somali waters, a foreign ministry official said.

"At around 1:20 am (16:20 GMT Monday), the destroyer... arrived in waters where the Samho Dream was sailing and she is now operating near the tanker," he told reporters on condition of anonymity.

"The hijacked vessel is now moving towards Somalia."

A defence ministry official was quoted by Yonhap news agency as saying the warship was staying about 30 miles (50 kilometres) from the Samho Dream for fear of endangering its crew of five South Koreans and 19 Filipinos.

The tanker, carrying an undisclosed amount of crude oil, was seized Sunday on its way from Iraq to the US state of Louisiana.
