Some pistols headspace off the bullet....like glocks and smith 1076's 10mm, etc... That means the bullet setting depth is really important....and also, some of these guns(the above, and others) have a unsupported area (that is quite large) near the base of the brass.... I learned this when we blew the mag into pieces, and pistol grips off a S+W 1076 10 mm yesterday. Unknown internal damage. It looks like pieces are missing and shits bent up in the lower!!! Can anyone say....duh?? You can tell by putting the bullet into the chamber and see if it goes ALL the way in and the rim of the brass is all that is showing....OR.... the bullet is all hung out there and not supported as you would hope it would be. This one blew because it was a little hot, a little over crimped, and not headspaced exactly. That's all I can figure. It was used brass, also...a unknown variable. It's impossible to find 10mm brass...you take what you can get. Conclusion... Fuck that!!! I hear glocks have the unsupported area at the top of the brass, instead of the bottom....which is even shittier... when parts start flying..... upwards!!! At least with the S+W...when you have a failure... parts and pieces are flying downwards and out. I don't think anyone should shoot +P or above through such a designed weapon...you may get a rude shock! IMO I'll never own another such design. Even if it was technically MY fault...which it was! Bullet goes boom...and nothing is containing or supporting the rear section of the shell wall. WTF? Some manufaturers make 'em that way to shorten up the OAL by just a little. If your brass is in good shape, you really have nothing to worry about. And stay away from +p+, imho, with an unsupported chamber. On recycled brass, there can be a bit of corrosion inside at the case rim. That's a stress point. (that's why the big magnum rifle cases are belted) 10mm generates a lot of chamber pressure. I'd probably only use new ammo or reload using new brass unless I was reducing the charge for plinking loads. Adversity is inevitable, misery is optional. Do or do not. There is no try. Used Truncated Cone Bevel Base bullets(all lead), and they had to be seated further than I liked to clear the rifling....used alliant pistol powder...and alliants web sight only has one charge as far as data goes for the 10mm????????? for a bullet that isn't even in production that I've heard of.....the brass was of unknown usage...the chamber was unsupported...all put together, it was an explosion waiting to happen....it appears. I'm going to re evaluate and not take anymore chances....although, I can't say I saw this one coming....to be honest. I thought I was underdoing the load, if anything.
