We have analyzed records of these sounds and found that most of their spectrum lies within the infrasound range, i.e. is not audible to humans. What people hear is only a small fraction of the actual power of these sounds. They are low-frequency acoustic emissions in the range between 20 and 100 Hz modulated by ultra-low infrasonic waves from 0.1 to 15 Hz. In geophysics, they are called acoustic-gravity waves; they are formed in the upper atmosphere, at the atmosphere-ionosphere boundary in particular. There can be quite a lot of causes why those waves are generated: earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, storms, tsunamis, etc. However, the scale of the observed humming sound in terms of both the area covered and its power far exceeds those that can be generated by the above-mentioned phenomena.

I thought so too -- just popped in my brain a moment before I decided to post it; I read someone else's comment above regarding the core slowing down, and I got this mental picture of everything inside the earth rotating in different directions.

And what happens to a gyroscope if one if it's rings stops rotating?

Doesn't the rest of it slow to a halt as well?

A longstanding problem with our understanding of the Sun was finding a reason that would explain why the corona was hotter than the surface. Logically it would seem that the farther one gets from the heat-producing energy of the Sun, the cooler the temperatures would be, but instead the corona -- one of the outermost layers of the atmosphere -- can be as hot as one to two million Kelvin. The solar surface stays at a balmy 6000 K.

However, scientists seem to have finally found the explanation. It appears that a high energy type of spicule -- a jet of plasma that reaches from the surface all the way into the outer atmosphere -- is responsible for heating up the corona. As the NSF notes, spicules have been known about for decades, but the ones scientists observed weren't hot enough to explain coronal temperatures.

The solution was discovered by scientists from Lockheed Martin's Solar and Astrophysics Laboratory (LMSAL), NCAR, and the University of Oslo, supported by NASA and the NSF, NCAR's sponsor. They theorized a new kind of spicule, which they call Type II, that is made of super-hot plasma and shoots out at speeds of over 100 km per second -- also causing them to disappear so rapidly that they were nearly impossible to observe.

Using NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Japanese Hinode satellite (source of the image above), they were able to observe the Type II spicule. Though there are still questions to be answered -- what causes these super hot spicules, for one -- this is still an exciting development during a time of increasingly productive solar study.

Thread: The Ribbon and the Bubble
Our solar system is in a giant magnetic field. If you think of the earth's magnetosphere...well, the sun has one too, and its called the Heliosphere. Basically, it is the solar winds. The solar winds flow out in the form of a magnetic 'skirt'.

At the edge of the Heliosphere, is called the boundary, or the heliopause. This is where the solar winds meet interstellar space and slow down...eventually to stop, leaving us in a 'bubble' of solar wind moving through the vastness of interstellar space.

Now, when Fluffy and the heliosphere merged, it made a remarkable change to our heliopause! It created a RIBBON of magnetism at the convergence point. The only way to create a magnetic 'Ribbon' is through electricity! Or charge! So, this interaction with the heliopause and Fluffy has a large component of electrical charge associated with it. Not only that, but this interchange of energies, this Ribbon, dwarfs the solar system!

The boundary of the heliosphere protects the solar system, just like the magnetosphere protects the earth from energetic 'particles', like solar storms. Well, interstellar space has storms too, in the form of exploding stars, etc.

These explosions form 'clouds' of energy in interstellar space, and sometimes we pass in and out of them. Depending on their size, it can take centuries and even millennium to pass all the way through them. Depending how energetic they are, they can and do affect the solar system and all the planets inside them.

BUT, normally, the boundary protects us from these and the clouds actually envelope our little 'bubble' of solar wind, and do not really penetrate the 'bubble'.

If the clouds (plasma - electricity and magnetism) are really strong though, they have the ability to penetrate into the heliosphere and the solar system becomes more 'energetic'. Just like when a solar storm happens...

If it has, then we WILL change. These things cause evolution to occur, and extinctions. This has been proven through ice-core samples and timing of the clouds we passed through already, determined by astrophysicists.

But when the axis is only slightly off, or it its mass distribution is not perfectly axissymmetric the gyroscope starts precessing. The question of the OP is quite like the question of why does a nonrotating gyroscope fall? Because it is in an instable equilibrium! When the axis of the spinning gyroscope is not perfectly perpendicular to the floor, note that this can also be caused by things like wind or the surface on which it spins, it starts precessing. At first with a very small radius, but then the gravitiational field can exert a torque wich increases this radius.

Thought you knew "bubbles?" Check out these dolphin's making bubbles with their blowholes and how they manipulate them. They <bubbles> behave in ways that I would not have imagined. Space/plasma seems very relational to the ocean. As above, so below. Anyway, thought this might stimulate some interesting ideas....great thread SS!! This should be the official site for new and exciting solar/system dynamics and ideas!
