Putin will burst Xi’s Olympic dreams in the war in Ukraine
(Bloomberg) — China’s President Xi Jinping could have the greatest impact on Vladimir Putin’s schedule as the United States and Europe are making more and more desperate efforts to stop Russia from invading Ukraine.
The Russian president said he would join the west at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics, where Chinese leaders generously gave billions of dollars to show the world the status of his country’s superpower.
The final need for Xi is for Putin to mask China’s big moments by causing a global security crisis between the United States and Europe. This is especially true if Xi is seeking unprecedented third phase approval later this year and is looking to increase its fame at home
starting an invasion of Ukraine in the midst of the moment of the Western Olympics would risk throwing a wrench into such warmth and pulling China into diplomatic conflict. According to a Beijing diplomat who asked not to be identified as talking about such a scenario,
Xi may have asked Putin on a recent phone call not to invade Ukraine during the game. Putin has repeatedly denied that he is now planning to attack Ukraine.
In a news briefing on January 14, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Beijing attaches great importance to this issue. A spokesman said all countries should comply with the traditional UN Olympic truce resolution “7 days before the start of the Olympic Games to 7 days after the end of the Paralympics.”
“Putin needs to act as carefully as possible, taking into account the interests of his ideological partners,” said Andrei Kolesnikov, Senior Fellow of the Carnegie Moscow Center.
“If Putin invades, he creates a very negative background for the Olympics.”
