Over the last several years, all the rage for police departments in the U.S. has been for the chiefs of police to travel to Israel to be indoctrinated, er...I mean to "learn" the tactics of Israeli security forces.
There's one problem with this, and it's enormous. In fact, it's THE problem which has become manifest in the U.S.
Israel illegally occupies the land of the Palestinians. Israel is an occupying power, much as the U.S. was in Iraq for nearly a decade.
In order to keep the Palestinians from mounting an effective defense -- peaceful or otherwise -- of this illegal occupation by force, Israeli security acts as an occupying force, considering their own citizens to be "insurgents".
Is this how we want to treat American citizens? As insurgents in our own country? Should U.S. police view U.S. citizens as insurgents to be corralled, intimidated, bullied, and worse? Is that a sustainable policy for domestic police?
Why in God's name are U.S. police departments traveling to Israel to be trained by one of the most barbaric police states in the world, who, if not for the U.S. veto vote at the U.N., would be universally condemned and have sanctions placed on them for their treatment of their own citizens?
