A barrel of oil is only about 40% gasoline, and 20% diesel fuel. The remaining 40% is other heavier hydrocarbons such as bunker fuel oil, motor oil, and grease. There is also huge costs in transportation and refining. And keep in mind that nowadays gasoline is 10% ethanol, so that factors into the price as well.
maybe they ran out of ethanol and had to sell real gas
Orange County wakes up to shock of $4.35 and climbing: Gas prices soar at independent stations
Orange County motorists blinked Friday and saw gas prices top $4 a gallon at some of their neighborhood gas stations.
At OC Gas on Grand Avenue in Santa Ana, prices shot up to $4.35 from $3.27 on Wednesday.
Frank Zamarripa of Santa Ana was shocked when he saw the prices. The 78-year-old’s daily drive involves shuttling his great-grandchildren around town.
“The price went up real bad. Whose fault is it? Let’s blame somebody,” he joked. “What can we do?”
