It's actually pretty common for equipment to go missing on a field training exercise (FTX). There is usually a rigorous search... lasting a few hours to perhaps 3 days. After that, the time becomes more valuable than the equipment, and the search stops. The soldier(s) who lost the gear get disciplined, and things go back to normal. What is odd about this is case 1. the length of the search 2. there being a published 'valuation' of the missing equipment 3. That it made the civilian news at all It's definitely not a typical situation... but I don't have enough info to do more than vaguely speculate on what is actually "missing" to keep them searching for so long. Even so, my best two guesses are either A) they have a fugitive, not a lost article; and/or B) there are multiple combat weapons involved in the "loss"...
I am dating one of the soldiers. Its actually missing equipment, not a fugitive. It is a lot of weapons missing. Not just a few bayonets. More like 120, and 800 scopes. The scopes alone are in their own boxes which is the size of a shoe box. Its not like a little box went missing. It had to have taken time for someone to get all that gear out without being seen. That's why I honestly think they were shipped out previously and the paper trail was lost. I really wanted to see my soldier for thanksgiving. All leave was cancelled.
I have been waiting for this to pop up in the news as I have a buddy who is in the unit that is locked down. The missing items are most definitely weapons. So the article is very misleading. Its $50,000 worth of bayonets and scopes and they are making the soldiers search the same area of the air field over and over. Nothing is really being done to find the weapons. So this coupled with the missing drone, very suspicious! I think its CYA time over at FT Drum!
Snip:
FORT DRUM — Members of an aviation company have been confined to their work area all week amid a search for approximately $50,000 worth of missing equipment.
