Google listens through your Android phone then serves ads to your computer based on what it hears. Wouldn't be suprised if they listen through the mic on your computer too though.
I do, but it wasn't me that this happened to. I don't use Facebook so....I guess I'm a lost cause for ads. This was told to me by someone specifically about Facebook ads, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they were listening on the cell phones too. Anything with a mic. And we can't forget the cameras either. Thanks for bringing that up, excellent point. Actually I don't think my source has a Google phone, just some kind of really basic cell phone. These seem to be conversations that took place in the house though, among family members.
I don't use Facebook either but I would think it would be a third party ad server on their so related ads will pop up all over the net when you're surfing. It actually happens to me all the time and I know the Android listens and does this but never really thought about the mic on my laptop. I'm sure they're listening there too. And to clarify, it's not just when you're talking on the phone, it's anytime.
The Facebook connection apparently is very graphic and explicit as the products or services that showed up were for unusual things. And it's happened several times so it's not coincidence. What's creepiest about this is that these products and services were ONLY MENTIONED IN VERBAL CONVERSATIONS....NOT on the computer in writing or searching. So...they have mics and programs that can process our private speech for commercial (and other) purposes. Thanks for your comment about the third party ad server, that's very interesting.
I know it happens to me all time except the ads are on Youtube (don't use facebook). I alway chalked it up the Android phone because I know it does this. Yes, the ads are very specific and exactly what you were talking about. I know, I know.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! Do the ads seem to be about topics that were only VERBALLY discussed rather than written or searched (as we know the read all our emails and Google)? I assume it's happening elsewhere besides Facebook, but I have a few sites I use repeatedly and social media generally aren't among them, so I'm probably less aware than the average bear in some ways. Thankfully my source shared these Facebook experiences with me!
Yes, verbally. It happens so often I don't even give it a second thought anymore. Last time was just two nights ago when we were discussing buying furniture for our new place. I got on Youtube and sure enough, furniture store ads. it's a regular thing but I almost always have my phone with me. yeah, pretty sad that I've just got accustomed to being spyed on.
WOW, I thought it was crazy when my source first told me, but I know the person is very credible and it's happened several times. So I guess it's a general problem that I haven't really been hearing people discuss in all the talk we've been having on spying in the past year. I think this needs to become an open issue - that we are being openly spied upon by our computers and phones (and God knows what else, maybe the fridge too!) and the info is being used directly and openly for marketing. Don't they think we'd notice this at some point, or has it just gotten to the point where they can do literally anything including spying on our private verbal conversations in our homes and cars?
Well, I don't think it's any secret. It's just the way they advertise. They even filed for a patent to do so... http://androidandme.com/2012/03/news/google-wants-to-monitor-your-phone-calls-background-noise-to-better-serve-you-ads/ https://www.google.com/search?q=Advertising+based+on+environmental+conditions&oq=Advertising+based+on+environmental+conditions&aqs=chrome..69i57&sourceid=chrome&espv=210&es_sm=122&ie=UTF-8
Oh, I think it's a BIG OLE SECRET that most people have NO IDEA that their private, verbal, non-computer, non-phone conversations in their own houses and cars, are being recorded and used for various purposes, including selling crap to us. I don't think most people are really aware of this at all, or that they would agree to it if they were!!! Awareness of this needs to grow as this spying MUST STOP.
Original Message
I am throwing this out there for thought and discussion. Has anyone had the experience where you have been discussing a topic - verbally - not something you have written an email about or Googled or used the computer on - and an AD comes up on Facebook that day (or maybe next day but usually same day) about the SAME TOPIC YOU HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING?
For example....you might be discussing something fairly unusual like....Filipino geneaology...and an ad will show up on Facebook for something directly related to that. And you only discussed it verbally with someone else in the house - NOT via the computer at all. Perhaps you've discussed something like oh....Smith Brothers cough drops (haven't seen them in an eon) and an ad will pop up on your Facebook that day for Smith Brothers.
I don't know how common this is and I don't see people discussing it but I wanted to raise the issue.
NOTICE YOUR FACEBOOK ADS IN THE FUTURE AND SEE IF THEY REFLECT ANY PRODUCTS OR TOPICS YOU'VE BEEN DISCUSSING RECENTLY.
My point? I think that they are actually listening to at least some of us via the computers and translating part of this information into advertising (that shows up on Facebook). We can guess where the rest goes. I don't know if Facebook has to be open for this to happen, or if it happens anyway. Now personally I NEVER use Facebook so I can't test it for myself. But I have been told this, so I figure you guys are a good test sample.
Be aware of your Facebook ads in the future and see if they reflect anything you've been discussing just verbally recently. this is NOT the same as Google ads that might reflect your email as they read all our emails anyway. This is LISTENING.
