[quote:pi 20063747:MV8yMDg2OTY3XzM1MTU1MTIzXzdCQUNFRTEz] [quote:Miggy:MV8yMDg2OTY3XzM1MTU0NzczX0JBRUEwMTgx] Pi, is there anyway we can communicate if this thread drops? I notice you're not a member so we can't PM. In the mean time, how come Adderall calms my mind down while Dex sped it up?
Hmm, that could be a tough one, I have tried a couple times to make an account, but it apparently didn't "take". To be perfectly honest, it was occultism, spirituality and mythology that drew me to this forum at first, and at this point I'd still rather maintain anonymity, which is part of the reason I decided to just remain as an 'AC' style user. Though I always use the 'pi' user handle when posting. A good chunk of my information comes from a website called "biopsychiatry.com", but it might not be the best first resource. Most of it is in the form of summaries of entries in neuropsychiatric journals. Wikipedia is very good as well, the info is ahead of university textbooks, and is generally an easy read as well. But on to the question at hand, Dex is what's known as a dopamine releasing agent, and it is rivaled, in clinical use, only by methamphetamine in this regard. Actually I'm going to quote a post I made yesterday as it fits here rather well: "...In the morning, it is the dopamine 2 neuronal receptors that are activated most heavily. These receptors (D2) is the trigger for drive/motivation. If the D2 receptors remain the dominant active dopamine pathway, we begin to feel agitated and perhaps anxious. Our brain tries to tell us to "do something" in chemical language." So Dexedrine is releasing dopamine, causing primarily enhanced behavioural drive. This is FAR more pronounced in bipolar or borderline individuals. Adderall, by comparison, also releases the neurotransmitters adrenaline and nor-adrenaline, mainly the latter, and it is effective at doing so. In most people, this results in MORE agitation, not less. However, in ADD, bipolar, and borderline genotypes, the adrenergic system is constantly overcompensating, resulting in the anxiety, nervousness, "fidgeting" etc. common in these syndromes. What Adderall is doing for you, and what it did for me, is kicking the adrenergic regulatory systems in gear, by forcibly releasing more of the neurotransmitters used by this system, which includes dopamine as well as (nor)adrenaline. So the resulting signal to the brain is essentially "Alright, we are good and alert, no need to try to get psyched up anymore!" And so this balances the "hypermotivational" effects of dextro-amphetamine, as things like intensive cleaning of rooms, re-arranging drawers, etc. is largely a response to the dopamine "Do something!" cue. That's it in a nutshell, there is more to it than the above, let me know if I have been unclear!
Original Message
I think my 50+ female friend is addicted to adderall. I know she was diagnosed as ADD about 7 or 8 years ago, and she ran a successful business.
Now she is having severe health and mental issues and has lost her business.
Anyone else familiar with this addiction?
