Observations from western Pembroke Pines
In western Pembroke Pines, from I-75 to U.S. 27 -- where most of the houses were built using the stricter post-Andrew codes -- damage was largely limited to splintered and uprooted trees and landscaping. While some houses had their screened patios and pool enclosures ripped, and a few missing roof tiles, there was almost no structural damage.
The same cound not be said of municipal infrastructure. All along Pines Boulevard traffic signals were missing and signs were down. At Pines and Flamingo Road, traffic lights hung just a few feet off the ground, like metal pinatas begging to be smacked by cars.
